    • A gasket assembly includes a one-piece gasket that has a mounting end, for mounting to an associated enclosure body, and a pipe engaging end, for receiving an associated pipe. An intermediate section is located between the mounting end and the pipe engaging end. A mounting element is of one piece with one of the mounting end, the pipe engaging end and the intermediate section. A clamping member is used with the gasket. The clamping member is looped to assume an annular configuration. A retaining member extends through an aperture located in the mounting element and through the clamping member for retaining the clamping member to the gasket in a transport position of the gasket assembly.

    • A placement ring assembly has inside and outside mandrels releasably fastened together to secure and align a pipe connector gasket therebetween. A permanent magnet of a magnet assembly is inserted through co-aligned openings in the mandrels and is magnetically attracted to an inner-core of a casting assembly. When the cast member is set, a mechanical release is rotated to release the magnetic attraction between the permanent magnet and the mold core. One of the mandrels may be provided with shock absorbing knockout pads while the other mandrel has openings aligned with the knockout pads to enable the knockout pads to be struck with a hammer to separate the mandrels. Rubber cushioning members absorb the shock of the impacts, protecting the mandrel from permanent damage. One-piece hole formers may likewise be provided with a magnetic assembly having a mechanic release as well as knock-out pads.

    • Method and apparatus for providing inserts, such as lift inserts and step inserts, in cast members. The inserts have breakaway tabs mounted in receiving slots in either a reusable holder or disk-shaped member. The assembled insert and holder are inserted through a collar on the outer jacket of a mold assembly and a locking pin passes through cooperating openings in the holder and collar to retain the lift insert/holder in place during the casting operation. The disk-shaped member is fixed to a jacket of the mold assembly. The breakaway tabs break away from the insert when the cast member is separated from the mold assembly, the breakaway tabs being discarded and the holder (disk-shaped member) being reusable many times for subsequent casting operations. The slots, in one embodiment, have a locking shoulder to lock the tabs in their slots. In another embodiment, a cam surface on the tabs lock the tabs in the slots. In another embodiment, one slot and one tab differ in radial or circumferential length from the other tabs and slots to permit alignment between the slots and tabs in only one position to assure that the tabs are properly mounted in the holder.

    • An expansion band having a spanning member whose free end is provided with a locking tab for cooperation with a locking surface having a plurality of selectable locking slots. A guide channel secured to the band cooperates with the band to define a guideway through which the spanning member extends thereby maintaining the spanning member and hence the free ends of the expansion band in alignment. During expansion of the expansion band the locking tab is free to snap out of each locking slot and into the next. Upon release of the expansion forces, however, the locking tab is prevented from snapping out of the locking slot in which it is presently inserted. A novel expansion unit comprised of a manual hydraulic pump operates a duck-bill type spreader which bears against associated bearing surfaces respectively provided on one end of the spanning member and one end of the guide channel to apply direct expansion forces to the expansion band. The locking tab and locking slots are shielded from the gasket expanded by the expansion band to protect the gasket from being scored and/or damaged.

    • A metallic clamping band of channel-shaped cross-section is arranged in a ring-shaped manner and has a discontinuity so as to define two adjacent free ends thereof. A curved channel-shaped insert has one of its ends welded to one end of said clamping band while the other of its ends is free to slidably engage the remaining end of the clamping band. The remaining end of the clamping band is provided with a plurality of openings arranged at spaced intervals along each of the sidewalls of the channel shaped member to define a plurality of pairs of openings. A locking pin is insertable into one of said pairs of openings to engage the free end of the insert portion and thereby maintain the clamping band in the expanded and locked position. The free end of the insert preferably has an extending tongue adapted to be positioned between the locking pin and the base of the clamping band when in the locked position. A pair of solid members are welded respectively to the insert and the clamping band to receive an expander for expanding the clamping band to the desired diameter. The holes may be replaced by slots having offset portions for receiving and seating the locking pin. The locking openings in the sidewalls may be replaced by a set screw which lockingly engages the insert to hold the clamping band in the locked position.
