    • To provide another way to exit and/or enter an elevated structure may include alternative access devices. For example, some of the windows on the upper floors of a building may be equipped with devices to allow occupants of those floors to exit and/or enter the building via the window. The devices may be integrated with the building. The alternative access devices also may be used for other applications. For example, the devices may provide access to a structure that is a considerable distance from the ground, such as a tree house or other play structure. The invented access device includes a chute mounted at the top to a pivotal frame mounted, for example near a window or other elevated opening, the chute having a connected or independently deployable step ladder therein and optionally spaced apart support members such as circular, rectangular or oval hoops therearound. The rungs of the step ladder provide a standoff for the webbed material of the chute. Stowage can be in a stowage receptacle mounted to an exterior portion of an elevated structure and deployment can be semi-automatic, reliable and smooth. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the access/escape device is hidden within and behind a box-like receptacle on an exterior wall of the building below a window sill. The receptacle generally includes aesthetic elements which closely correspond to aesthetic elements of the structure, rending the receptacle visually unobtrusive and relatively hidden upon casual observation.

    • A memory system couples command, address or write data signals from a memory controller to a memory device and read data signals from the memory device to the memory controller. A respective strobe generator circuit in each of the memory controller and the memory device each generates an in-phase strobe signal and a quadrature strobe signal. Command, address or write data signals stored in respective output latches in the memory controller are clocked by the in-phase signals from the internal strobe generator circuit. These command, address or write data signals are latched into input latches in the memory device by the quadrature strobe signal coupled from the memory controller to the memory device. In substantially the same manner, read data signals are coupled from the memory device to the memory controller using the in-phase and quadrature strobe signals generated by the internal strobe generator circuit.

    • Extruded metal rails (41) formed with a longitudinal channel (42) are attached to the structure of a building to slidably receive anchor brackets for fixing slabs (30) of cladding material, with a bottom anchor (1) supporting a slab of cladding material at the level of each floor. A spacer (161) is temporarily- inserted between the top of a fixed rail (41) and the bottom anchor (1) which is to be fixed above the rail. Each spacer is provided with locating sockets (166, 167) and (168, 169) having locating pins (171) for positively positioning the bottom anchor (1) while its position is marked. After removal of the spacer the bottom anchors are fixed in position leaving the correct expansion gap above the rail below. The cladding system speeds up installation and significantly reduces positioning errors.

    • A system for inhibiting operation of a vehicle (10) by a person who has consumed alcohol comprises an alcohol testing device (18) for measuring the level of alcohol in a breath sample provided by a person intending to operate the vehicle, whereby the vehicle is disabled if the measured level of alcohol is found to exceed a specified limit, and an infrared imaging device (12) operable to image a region including the operator' s seat and determine the presence or absence of a person in the seat. The vehicle can be disabled if the infrared imaging device detects that the person leaves the seat after providing a satisfactory breath sample for enabling the vehicle, or that a second person is present near the alcohol testing device. A door sensor may also be included to allow disablement of the vehicle if the door is opening after the vehicle is enabled in response to a satisfactory alcohol test.
