    • The biologically active reaction chamber is connected to the post-clarification chamber by a vertical circulation system. This system consists of a central riser pipe with an axial pump and a conical inlet section near the floor of the reactor, and is provided with a flow-reversing hood whose height can be adjusted, pref. telescopically. An upper gas inlet is provided and a falling flow pipe surrounds the riser pipe and the flow reversing hood, and extends from the level of the highest point of the hood to near the inlet section. The overflow edge of the post-clarification chamber is below the level of the hood, and an outlet pipe with a liq. level control valve is located between the riser pipe above the pump and the distributor of the post-clarification chamber. The sludge recirculation pipe from the post-clarification chamber and the waste water inlet are preferably connected to the upper part of the falling flow pipe. Overflow openings are provided in the falling-flow pipe immediately above the level of the overflow. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in the aerobic biological treatment of waste water. The technical functions of the unit (a high deg. of aeration, avoidance of sludge deposition, effective biomass sepn., etc.) are achieved with a minimal maintenance requirement and with simple and reliable control of foaming, while occupying the smallest possible floor space and with min. energy consumption.

In the bottom of the vat is a gas/ liquid separator comprising discs and perforated cones 3, 4; foam passes through the perforations up the discharge pipe 7 and overflows through an adjustable throttle 8, being destroyed by contact with the turbulent liquid. The partially de-aerated liquid from the separator 2 passes through the channels 9, manifold 10 and line 11 to the centrifugal pump 12, which completes de-aeration, the gas from the pump passing to a separator 17 where any liquid droplets are removed and returned to the vat by a jet pump 18, while gas is vented at 21. De-aerated liquid from the pump 12 is supplied to line 13 through a pre-aeration device 24 and heat exchanger 14. Gas is supplied to the device 24 by an injector 25 where gas at higher pressure from line 26 induces gas at lower pressure from line 27. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the vat has two stages. Liquid from line 13 is supplied to a device 34 where it falls freely down a conduit 37 inducing gas through inlets 38. The gas/liquid mixture enters the upper chamber of the vat as a jet, and thence passes under a bell 40 to a second gas/liquid mixing device 39 where further gas is induced, and also foam from the upper chamber through inlet 41. The device 39 discharges as a jet into a lower chamber which contains the gas/ liquid separator 2 and foam discharge pipe 7.
