    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ground construction machine and a tool driving control method for the ground construction machine, which automatically select the optimum gear stage out of a plurality of gear stages and carry out stable rotational driving of a tool. SOLUTION: The ground construction machine includes the rotationally driven tool; a driving part 8 including a plurality of variable displacement hydraulic motors; detectors 86, 87 detecting the pressure difference on the supply side and discharge side of a fluid supplied to the hydraulic motors; and a driving control unit 80 automatically selecting one of the plurality of gear stages of the driving part to perform driving control of the driving part. The driving control unit selects the gear stage according to the pressure difference, and the reference value and reference time of the pressure difference for the shift of the gear stage are set to each gear stage shift. When a state of the pressure difference being not less than the reference value for shifting the gear stage to the low speed side is continuous for the reference time or longer, the gear stage is shifted to the low speed side. When a state of the pressure difference being not more than the reference value for shifting the gear stage to the high speed side is continuous for the reference time or longer, the gear stage is shifted to the high speed side.
