    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tea plucking appropriateness evaluation method with which whether plucking of sprouts of tea plants is appropriate or not can be determined in a short time, highly accurately and easily.SOLUTION: A vegetation index is calculated using optical data of image information of tea leaves and based on the correlation between at least one evaluation item of total nitrogen, fiber quantity, spout weight, growth degree and the number of leaves and the vegetation index, tea plucking appropriateness is evaluated regarding the evaluation items using the calculated vegetation index, thereby determining whether plucking is appropriate in timing. The optical data include data regarding reflection light of tea leaves in three light regions of a near infrared light region, a red light region and a green light region, and the vegetation index is calculated by selecting or weighting the light region in accordance with a tea growth period. A plucking appropriateness evaluation system comprises a photographing device which creates image information of tea leaves, and an information processor which calculates the vegetation index and uses the calculated vegetation index to evaluate the tea plucking appropriateness regarding the evaluation items, and evaluates plucking appropriateness using a database which determines the correlation between the evaluation items and the vegetation index.
