    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum carburizing apparatus which can convert an easily available saturated hydrocarbons gas (such as town gas and propane gas) to a gas containing an unsaturated hydrocarbon such as acetylene or a hydrocarbon radical group, can stably supply a high concentration of or a wide concentration range of an acetylene-containing gas, and can reduce a gas that does not contribute or gives adverse effects to carburization in a furnace, and to provide a method therefor.
      SOLUTION: This vacuum carburizing apparatus comprises a conversion unit 10 for converting the saturated hydrocarbon gas 1 to a converted gas 2 containing the unsaturated hydrocarbon such as acetylene or the hydrocarbon radical group, a gas-analyzing unit 12 for analyzing a gas composition of the converted gas, a vacuum carburizing furnace 14 which uses a carburizing gas 4 containing the unsaturated hydrocarbon such as acetylene or the hydrocarbon radical group, and a conversion control unit 16 for controlling the conversion unit, wherein the conversion control unit controls the concentration of the unsaturated hydrocarbon (such as acetylene and ethylene) contained in the carburizing gas 4 to a desired range.
