    • To hold and transport folded printed products, a belt (18), for example a steel ribbon, has separating and holding elements (19), for example flat metal plates or sheets secured thereto. The transport belt (18) with the separating elements thereon is guided about a curved guide surface (20), for example a roller, whereupon the separating elements will spread or fan out from the underlying transport belt. In this spread or fanned out position, they can accept one sheet element (11) of a spread apart folded product (1), the separating element (19) gripping that sheet element (11) between itself and the transport belt. The folded products can then be transported, in scale-like or imbricated or shingled form, to a storage position, for example by rolling up the steel ribbon (18). The folded products are released be again passing the belt about a curved directing surface (26) which may again be a roller or the same roller, which will again fan out the separating elements, spreading them from the transport belt (18) for release of the folded products, for example for placement on a saddle or other support structure where they are held suspended from beneath the bend or fold thereof.

    • To provide for fine-adjustment of the relative angular position of a driven body of rotation, such as a plate cylinder (1) of a printing machine, and having a driven shaft (21, 41) with respect to a driving shaft (9, 40), an axially shiftable intermediate shaft portion (14, 53) is positioned between the driving shaft (9, 40) and the driven shaft (21, 41) and the body of rotation, respectively. An elastic coupling structure (16, 24; 55, 57), for example a composite stacked leaf spring, and having the characteristic of being circumferentially stiff but axially flexible, couples the intermediate shaft, for axially shifting movement, between the respective shafts. Preferably, two such elastic coupling structures are provided. The intermediate shaft is axially shifted in response to changes in transmitted torque by a drive train from a drive motor (4) to the printing cylinder (1) under control of a torque responsive element, such as a strain gauge (37) coupled to a servo system which axially shifts the intermediate shaft portion, or by a torsion sleeve (46) which can twist in response to transmitted torque, the change in axial dimension upon twist of the torsion sleeve being transmitted through a hollow shaft to the intermediate shaft portion. Thus, circumferential register of the driven body of rotation, for example the printing machine cylinder (1) can be controlled in dependence on transmitted torque and register errors due to loading on the printing cylinder can be eliminated. The system is also applicable to other apparatus structures, such as rotary punches and the like.

    • To provide a cleaning arrangement which includes brushes brushing against the surface of a rubber blanket or other printing cylinder, to remove lint, dust, dirt and other contaminants therefrom a strip of brushes (9), preferably backed up by a suction pipe (8) to remove lint from the surface of the cylinder and from the brushes, is located inwardly of the finger guard strip (6) which is provided in advance of the nip between rotating cylinders as a safety measure. The cleaning elements, that is, brushes (9) and suction tubes (8), if provided, are located inwardly, with respect to the nip, of the safety guard or safety rail (6) which, typically, has angled or essentially in cross section part-circular, typically semi-circular shape. The safety guard is usually supported by levers (11) or slidably supported in the printing machine, to be placed out of position from the nip when the machine is stopped. The cleaning elements, that is brushes and suction tube, if provided, move with the safety rail to provide access to the nip between the cylinders when the machine is stopped. The cleaning structure does not require additional space or holding elements in the machine since the holders (11) for the safety guard rail (6) likewise support the cleaning elements (8, 9).

    • To permit introduction of adjacently located sheet elements (20, 22), for example folded sheets (24), received from a folding flap cylinder (2), with the fold line or spine leading and with the sheet elements spread apart, a guide belt (13) has laterally projecting fingers (12) which engage between the sheet elements (20, 22), the guide belt being positioned adjacent to and operating at essentially the same speed as a pair of transport belts (25, 26) between which the sheet elements are being transported. The fingers are inserted between the sheet elements as a sheet (24) is folded or two individual sheet elements are gripped by a folding flap or gripper cylinder (2), and remain between the sheet elements upon transport by the transport belt system. At a delivery region, adjacent a storage unit, the guide belt is deflected over a roller, thereby twisting the fingers and spreading the sheet elements apart adjacent their trailing ends, by guiding the guide belt in a path different from the transport belt system. Preferably, the spread-apart sheet elements are transferred to an accordion or zig-zag pocket structure, for example made of elastic sheet elements, which, to receive the spread-apart sheet elements, has the accordion pockets spread, for example for a worm (50).

    • To match the speed of incoming sheets, typically folded sheets, form a first high-speed transport system (3, 4) to a receiving speed of a second, lower speed transport system (5, 6), a decelerating path is formed by a third transport system (1, 2) which includes moving belts which are looped about looping rollers (17, 18) in S-configuration to further define a third path between opposed rollers (19, 20), the looping rollers being reciprocatably connected to a slide unit by an eccenter-and-crank arrangement (22, 23) so that the belts (14, 14') of the third unit will have undulating variable speed between maximum and minimum. The rotation of the eccenter-and-crank arrangement (22, 23) is synchronized with the transport of sheets such that, when the belts are at their maximum speed, they are about to grip the leading edge of a sheet being fed thereto, and then decelerate to their minimum speed when the sheets are about to leave the third transport system. The receiving belts of the second, slower speed system may also be stationary, or be replaced by a slide table to receive the sheets in imbricated (FIG. 5) position.

    • Folded products, supplied in dual-comb like interdigited form are transported by a transport chain system (75) carrying grippers (84, 85) in a vertical direction to form a vertical stack. Grippers engage alternate products about their fold line, and hold the interdigited intermediate sheets therebetween. The transport system and a carrier structure are placed in relative positions to permit the grippers of the transport system to pick up the products (1, 2) at the fold line and, after reorienting the products, to place them in a vertical stack on a support (96, 110), a cam track (88) opening the grippers on the transport system (75) as the grippers pass about a vertically movable deflection wheel (97) to release the products. The deflection wheel moves upwardly as the stack grows. The products are originally supplied in open V-shaped form, and one group (2) of the products is gripped at the open edges of the V, as well as at the fold lines; as so gripped it is inverted and transported to fit, roof-like, over the other products (1) which retain their open V position, for example by guiding a pair of clamping strips or rails (35, 35') with grippers (40, 41) thereon in a circular path.
