    • To suppress generation of scales on surfaces of a strip and to reduce the amount of non-oxidising gas consumed in the casting of strip in a twin roll caster there is provided downstream apparatus comprising pinch rolls 17a and 17b for pinching a strip 4 continuously cast by a pair of casting rolls 1a and 1b, a coiler 8 for coiling the strip 4 delivered from the pinch rolls 17a and 17b, an upstream chamber 19 for enclosing a travelling path of the strip 4 from the casting rolls 1a and 1b to the pinch rolls 17a and 17b, a downstream chamber 24 for enclosing a travelling path of the strip 4 from the pinch rolls 17a and 17b to a position before the coiler, a shutter on an end of the downstream chamber closer to the coiler and a gas supply source for supplying non-oxidising and reducing gases to the upstream and downstream chambers 19 and 24 and quenching means within the downstream chamber to cool the strip so that it leaves the chamber at a temperature of 300°C or below.

The casting rolls (22) rotate mutually opposite directions to produce a solidified metal strip (12) moving downwardly from the nip (27). The strip (12) passes along a transit path (10) which takes it away from the nip (27) in an unrestrained loop (29) disposed within a strip enclosure (38) within which the strip is confined through said transit path (10). The strip (12) moves downwardly from the nip (27) to form the unrestrained loop (29) passes between a pair of cooled non-contact heat absorbers (101) to which heat is radiated from the strip (12) whereby to extract from the strip heat generated by completion of solidification of metal therein after leaving the casting pool (30). Heat absorbers (101) are formed as opposite side walls of a cooling collar (100) defining an upper part of enclosure (38) and provided with cooling water ducts (102).

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the symmetricalness of a strip shape by executing almost uniform cooling over the whole length of a cast pool part and avoiding the variation of asymmetrical thickness in the width direction of the strip. SOLUTION: In a metallic strip continuous casting apparatus, each casting roll 1 is constituted of projecting shaft parts 31, 32 for attaching the casting roll so as to rotate, a copper sleeve 25 for forming the peripheral wall provided with water flowing passages 26 in the longitudinal direction, flanges 27, 28 for forming end walls and passages 35, 36 in the radial direction for flowing in/out the water to the water flowing passages 26. Then, the water flowing passages 26 are mutually connected as group, and the water stream is made to flow to/from frontward/backward between both end parts of the roll by flowing from the one end part to the other end part. A demarcated outward shoulder part 44 engaged with a refractory demarcated plate 10 by forming notch parts on the outer part of peripheral wall of the roll, mutually connecting side part galleries 42, 43 between the water flowing passage 26 in the longitudinal direction and the radial passage 35, 36 are arranged at the outer end part having the notched parts on the almost peripheral wall of the roll.
