    • A User Equipment, UE, (101) of a cellular communication system (100) transmits scheduling assistance data to a base station (105) comprising a base station scheduler (209) which schedules uplink packet data. The scheduling assistance data relates to uplink packet data transmission from the UE (101). The UE (101) comprises a channel controller (213) which is operable to cause the scheduling assistance data to be transmitted from the UE (101) to the base station (105) in a first physical resource of an uplink air interface. The first physical resource is not managed by the base station based scheduler (209). The scheduling assistance data may specifically be transmitted in a first transport channel multiplexed with other transport channel s on a physical resource. The transport channels may be individually optimised and may have different termination points and transmission reliabilities. Specifically, the transport channel supporting the scheduling assistance data signalling may have a high reliability and be terminated in the base station (105).

    • A mobile communications system comprising one or more mobile communications devices and a mobile communications network, the mobile communications network including a radio network part and a core network part and being configured to communicate data packets to and/or from mobile communications devices. The radio network part including one or more base stations for communicating the data packets to or receiving the data packets from the mobile communications devices via a radio access interface, and the core network part comprising one or more infrastructure equipment for communicating the data packets to or receiving the data packets from the base stations of the radio network part. The core network part and the radio network part are configured to provide a broadband packet network which is adapted to communicate the data packets to or from the mobile communications devices in accordance with a relatively high bandwidth, and to provide contemporaneously a dedicated messaging network which is adapted to communicate the data packets to or receive from the mobile communications devices in accordance with a relatively low bandwidth, and one or more of the mobile communications device, the base station or the infrastructure equipment is configured to determine whether to communicate each of the data packets via the broadband packet network or the dedicated messaging network in accordance with predetermined criteria. The data packets are therefore communicated to or received from the mobile communications devices using either the broadband packet network or a dedicated messaging network. The dedicated messaging network is arranged to communicate short data grams more efficiently than larger data communications. Therefore by selecting either the dedicated messaging network or the broadband network as a function of the content of the data packet a more efficient use of available communications resources and hardware resources is provided.

    • An infrastructure apparatus for reducing interference, the apparatus comprising a controller. The controller is arranged in operation to determine an amount of interference in a first frequency band to radio signals for a first type of traffic caused by radio signals for a second type of traffic in a second frequency band, wherein the radio signals for the first type of traffic are to and/or from a first group of one or more base stations; and the radio signals for the second type of traffic are to and/or from a second group of one or more base stations. The controller is further arranged in operation to, in response to the determined interference, generate instructions to influence the second group in respect of the transmission of the radio signals for the second type of traffic in the second frequency, wherein the controller is further operable to generate the instructions using a priority for the first type of traffic and a priority for the second type of traffic. In one example, the first group of one or more base stations may be providing communications services to human to human communications (H2H), whereas the second group of one or more base stations may be providing communications services supporting machine type communications (MTC), where H2H communications are prioritizes over machine type communications. The second group of one or more base stations is therefore instructed to take action to reduce the interference caused b the mobile unit.

    • A mobile communications system comprises a first group of one or more base stations which are arranged to communicate signals with mobile units via a wireless access interface by transmitting and/or receiving radio signals within a first frequency band; a second group of one or more base stations which are arranged to communicate signals with mobile units via a wireless access interface by transmitting and/or receiving radio signals within a second frequency band; and a controller. The controller is arranged in operation to determine an amount of interference in the first frequency band to radio signals for a first type of traffic where the interference is caused by radio signals for a second type of traffic in the second frequency band, wherein: the radio signals for the first type of traffic are to and/or from a first base station of the first group; and the radio signals for the second type of traffic are to and/or from to a second base station of the second group; and to, in response to the determined interference, generate instructions to influence the second group in respect of the transmission of the radio signals for the second type of traffic in the second frequency band, wherein the instructions are generated based on at least a priority for the first type of traffic and a priority for the second type of traffic. In one example, the first group of one or more base stations may be providing communications services to human to human communications (H2H), whereas the second group of one or more base stations may be providing communications services supporting machine type communications (MTC), where H2H communications are prioritizes over machine type communications. The second group of one or more base stations is therefore instructed to take action to reduce the interference caused by the mobile unit.
