    • A method and apparatus for controlling the operation of a vehicle using a predictive control system. The technology includes predicting a characteristic of a portion of a road and defining a cost function based on a plurality of vehicle parameters and the predicted road characteristic. Engine torque and engine brake torque commands and vehicle set speed are calculated, and a gear shifting command is determined. The system may include a Kalman filter for estimating vehicle mass and road grade when measurements of a navigation sensor and data from a three dimensional map are unavailable, and a Kalman filter for estimating vehicle mass, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance when the navigation sensor measurements and map data are available. The engine torque, engine brake torque, and gear shifting commands are adjusted based on the predicted road characteristic to follow the calculated vehicle set speed to minimize the defined cost function.
