摘要： An access point operates in an 802.11 wireless communication network communicating with a client station, and includes a smart antenna for generating directional antenna beams and an omni-directional antenna beam. An antenna steering algorithm scans the directional antenna beams and the omni-directional antenna beam for receiving signals from the client station. The signals received via each scanned antenna beam are measured, and one of the antenna beams is selected based upon the measuring for communicating with the client station. The selected antenna beam is preferably a directional antenna beam. Once the directional antenna beam has been selected, there are several usage rules for exchanging data with the client station. The usage rules are directed to an active state of the access point, which includes a data transmission mode and a data reception mode.

摘要： A method and apparatus for transmit power control (TPC) while switching a beam among a plurality of beams in a wireless communication system. An antenna array generates a plurality of directional beams and preferably an omni-directional pattern and switches a beam among the plurality of beams preferably including the omni-directional pattern. Link quality on at least one of the plurality of beams is measured, and a beam having a greatest link quality is selected. If the selected beam is different from a current beam, a beam is switched from the current beam to the selected beam. While switching a beam, TPC parameters are adjusted based on the link quality difference between the link quality of the current beam and the link quality of the selected beam, and optionally, base on other parameters.

摘要： Wireless communication method and apparatus for selecting a channel type for a call are disclosed. In a wireless communication system that supports both a basic low speed channel and a special high speed channel, when a call is received from a user, it is determined whether the high speed channel is suitable for the call and preferable for the user. If so, it is determined whether the high speed channel is available. If so, the call is admitted and assigned to the high speed channel. If these criteria are not met, the call is admitted and assigned a low speed channel if an available low speed channel can support the call; otherwise the call request is rejected. After admitting the call, it is continuously determined whether the high speed channel or the low speed channel is best, and the channel type is switched accordingly.

A switch beam antenna system generates a plurality of beams in a predefined beam pattern and switches the current beam position to one of the plurality of predefined beams in accordance with measurement results for each of the beams. Quality of signals is periodically measured for each of the plurality of predefined beams, and the best beam is determined. The current beam is switched to either the best beam or an intermediate beam in accordance with the separation between the best beam and the current beam.

摘要： A method and apparatus for measuring a channel quality in wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) which are equipped with a subscriber based smart antenna. The WTRUs are equipped with a smart antenna so that the WTRU generates a plurality of directional beams and, optionally, an omni-directional beam. A dwell time is provided in a measurement period to switch a beam from an active beam to a non-active beam. The active beam is one of the plurality of directional beams or, optionally, the omni-directional beam, for communication with one or more serving base station(s). A beam is switched to a non-active beam at the initiation of the dwell time. Signals are received through the switched non-active beam, and samples of the received signals are generated. The samples are stored in a memory. Channel quality is measured using the samples, whereby the dwell time to measure the channel quality is minimized.

摘要： The present invention integrates resource allocation between time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD) in wireless communication systems. A radio network controller (RNC) receives a radio access bearer (RAB) request from a core network or a wireless receive/transmit unit. The RNC utilizes a TDD-FDD selector to assign radio resources in response to the request. The TDD-FDD selector evaluates various parameters regarding the received RAB request and determines whether it is preferable to assign TDD resources or FDD resources and whether such resources are currently available. Once resources are assigned, system conditions are evaluated to determine whether optimizations may be made to a current resource allocation.

摘要： A temporary (temp) dedicated channel (DCH) is used to support communications. The temp-DCH channel is a channel that is assigned to a user having a set duration. After the duration expires, the channel is automatically released to the user. Embodiments of the invention relate to establishing the temp-DCH channel, determining the data rate and duration of the channel. Other embodiments relate to establishing back-to-back temp-DCH channels and the implementation details of these embodiments. Additionally, one embodiment relates to adding a start/stop function to the medium access controller which can be used in conjunction with temp-DCH as well as other applications.
