摘要： Technology to provide improved quality-of-experience-aware multimedia streaming is disclosed. Several types of communications that can be made between clients and servers are described. These communications enable improvements to current approaches that are used to achieve hyper-text transfer protocol (HTTP) adaptive streaming. These messages can be used in conjunction with computer circuitry configured to: determine a bandwidth available to the server for transmitting HTTP adaptive streaming content to a plurality of clients; receive HTTP requests from the plurality of clients for representations offered by the server in a manifest file for the HTTP adaptive streaming; and calculate an availability of each representation that is offered in the manifest file for the server. The availability can be calculated, at least in part, based on the determined bandwidth. The availability of each representation can be communicated from the server to the plurality of clients.

In an example, a server operable to provide hyper-text transfer protocol (HTTP) adaptive streaming, can include computer circuitry configured to: determine a bandwidth available to the server for transmitting HTTP adaptive streaming content to a plurality of clients; receive HTTP requests from the plurality of clients for representations offered by the server in a manifest file for the HTTP adaptive streaming; and calculate an availability of each representation that is offered in the manifest file for the server. The availability can be calculated, at least in part, based on the determined bandwidth. The availability of each representation can be communicated from the server to the plurality of clients.

The orientation sensor information describes a device's support for orientation sensor capabilities, or a current orientation state of the device. Based on such information, a multimedia server provides different encoded versions of multimedia content for different device orientation modes supported by the device. The server may also adapt, dynamically and in real-time, media capture or transcode parameters for creating content tailored (i.e., optimized) for the device's current orientation mode, or for its various intermediate orientation states and spatial positions.

In some embodiments, for example, an apparatus includes a processor circuit, a communication component operative by the processor circuit to receive a data transmission containing a description segment and a correspondence segment, a correspondence processing component operative by the processor circuit to determine a plurality of multicast content streams representing different versions of a media content based on the correspondence segment, and a selection component operative by the processor circuit to select and receive one or more of the plurality of multicast content streams based on characteristics identified in the description segment. In various such embodiments, the apparatus includes an adaptation component operative by the processor circuit to adaptively switch across the plurality of multicast content streams for reception and processing based on characteristics identified in the description segment. Scalable video coding can be used to transmit a baseline layer of multi-media content using the mobile/cellular network and one or more enhancement layers over the TVWS channels. Joint source-channel coding can be used to adjust the transmission scheme used by mobile/cellular and/or TVWS based on end user experience.
