    • Fluosilicic acid is reacted with ammonia in aqueous solution to produce ammonium fluoride and hydrated silica, the ammonium fluoride as such or after conversion to ammonium bifluoride is reacted with alkali metal fluoride in aqueous solution to produce alkali metal bifluoride and ammonia or ammonium fluoride, and the alkali metal bifluoride is thermally decomposed to produce alkali metal fluoride and hydrofluoric acid. The ammonia or ammonium fluoride and alkali metal fluoride produced are recycled. A 5-60% stoichiometric excess of ammonia may be added to the fluosilicic acid with vigorous stirring at 30-170 DEG F. The ammonium fluoride produced may be converted to bifluoride at 250-410 DEG F. The alkali metal fluoride may be reacted as a powder of less than 70 mesh size. The reaction temperature may be 50-410 DEG F. for the reaction of ammonium fluoride, and 50-170 DEG F. for the reaction of ammoniumbifluoride. Ammonium fluoride may be reacted with potassium fluoride at 200-410 DEG F. to produce directly molten potassium bifluoride and gaseous ammonia. Ammonium bifluoride may be reacted with sodium fluoride at 50-170 DEG F. to produce crystals of sodium bifluoride which may be separated by decantation, filtration or certrifugation and then heated to drive off water and ammonium fluoride. The alkali metal bifluoride may be dried at below 550 DEG F. and decomposed at above 575 DEG F. The gaseous hydrofluoric acid produced may be condensed at below 80 DEG F.
