    • A wireless communications device for a multiple input multiple output wireless communications system includes a radio frequency transceiver that includes at least two antennae and a medium access control device that includes a link adaptation module. The link adaptation module dynamically adjusts a bandwidth of the wireless communications device based on a transmission error rate and a correlation measurement at a remote wireless communications device. A transmission error module receives the transmission error rate from the remote wireless communications device and generates a transmission error control signal. A signal correlation module receives the correlation measurement from the remote wireless communication device and generates a signal correlation control signal. The link adaptation module adjusts at least one of the bandwidth and an amount of spatial multiplexing that is executed by a space-time processor based on the transmission error control signal and the signal correlation control signal.

    • A wireless communications system including an antenna configured to receive a sequence of symbols through a channel, in which the sequence of symbols comprise bits of user data that have been previously mapped to the sequence of symbols. The wireless communications system further includes a demodulator configured to generate a sequence of demodulated symbols by multiplying the sequence of symbols by a conjugate of a channel response of the channel; a demultiplexer configured to generate an in-phase component and a quadrature component of each demodulated symbol in the sequence of demodulated symbols; a slicer configured to, for each demodulated symbol, generate a decoded symbol by performing a hard decision based on the in-phase component and the quadrature component of the demodulated symbol; and a bit mapping module configured to determine the bits of user data associated with each decoded symbol.

    • A method and apparatus for processing a frequency domain digital Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbol. The method includes generating an estimate of a channel for each sub-carrier of the frequency domain digital OFDM symbol; generating channel state information corresponding to each sub-carrier of the frequency domain digital OFDM symbol; and generating a plurality of demodulated symbols based, at least in part on, the estimate of the channel for each sub-carrier of the frequency domain digital Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbol, in which each demodulated symbol corresponding to a given sub-carrier of the frequency domain digital OFDM symbol. The method further includes performing a soft-decision decoding on each demodulated symbol to generate a corresponding soft-decision decoded symbol. The soft-decision decoding of each demodulated symbol is based, at least in part, on the channel state information corresponding to the given sub-carrier associated with the demodulated symbol.

    • Joint equalization and decoding techniques to eliminate the division operations in the Frequency domain Equalizer (FEQ) of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM) receiver by incorporating the magnitude of the channel impulse response estimates into the decision metrics in the decoder. This includes methods for both hard-decision symbol-by-symbol detection and soft-decision decoding using the Viterbi algorithm. Further, Channel State Information (CSI) is incorporated to improve the performance of the receiver. The disclosure also introduces a computationally efficient bit-by-bit piecewise approximation technique incorporating CSI to implement decoder decision metrics. Finally, an efficient implementation technique for multiple receiver antennae using Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) and Viterbi decoding with CSI is disclosed.
