    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in a display apparatus such as PDP, for obtaining a bright video while an increase in power consumption is suppressed, the luminance level of a specific area of a display panel is decreased according to the average luminance level of the entire display panel, however, in the case the display image includes low luminance areas and high luminance areas intermingled with each other, even the luminance of a low luminance area is reduced to cause gradation crush.
      SOLUTION: The average luminance level of each area is detected, and based on the level of the average luminance level of each area and the luminance level of an input image, a shading process is controlled for each area. If the luminance level of the input image signal is greater than a predetermined threshold as a result of this control, the shading process is performed. If it is smaller than the predetermined threshold, the shading process is stopped.
