    • PURPOSE:To prevent the bad influence caused by roll eccentricity and to improve the flowability of a material and the accuracy of its sheet thickness by measuring directly the sheet thickness at the middle between stands and controlling the sheet thickness basing on the measured value. CONSTITUTION:A notch or a through hole 11 is formed in the arm of a looper 10 in order to measure the sheet thickness of a steel sheet 12 directly between narrowly spaced rolling stands. A gamma radiation source 13 is provided to one side and a scintillator 14 is provided as a radiation detector to the other side, for instance, along the center line of the hole 11 by interposing the sheet 12 of measuring object as a boundary between them. The sheet thickness is measured by such a sheet thickness measuring device to obtain the real sheet thickness by correcting the measured value basing on a looper angle theta. In a rolling mill having No.1-No.7 stands, for instance, the thickness is measured at the outlet side of No.4 stand by said thickness gauge 3, and the measured value is fed back to the upstream stand through the former of feedback control device 20A, 20B. At the same time, the thickness at the outlet side of No.7 stand is fed back to No.5-No.7 stands through the device 20B.

    • PURPOSE:To detect an intermediate sheet thickness in hot rolling and to control automatically a rolling pressure by measuring the sheet thickness by transmission at the rising part of a looper located between stands and correcting the measured value basing on the inclination of looper and the temperature of a material in a sheet thickness measurement in hot rolling. CONSTITUTION:A through-hole 11 is provided to a looper 10 located between stands, and the thickness of a hot hoop 12 is measured by receving the rays of a gamma radiation source 13 by a scintillator 14. The net thickness hT of hot hoop 12 is calculated by detecting an inclination angle Q of the looper 10 and using an approximate equation to estimate the cold hoop thickness from the hoop temperature. A feedback control device 20 of the stands is operated basing on the measured value to perform thickness control. Because intermediate thickness measurement is performed by utilizing the looper part between stands, a space area required for the control is saved and an accurate roll adjustment can be performed.

    • PURPOSE:To facilitate accurate plate thickness measurement with high responsiveness by a method wherein a beam source which radiates a beam with a plurality of different energies is introduced to measure the thickness of a steel plate directly at the intermediate steps. CONSTITUTION:A thickness meter 14 is provided between the intermediate steps 10D and 10E of a rolling mill. Between each steps, loopers 16 are provided to absorb the sagging of a steel plate 12. The steel plate 12 is pushed up by the looper to maintain a constant tensile force. A radiation beam radiated by a beam source of the thickness meter 14 transmits the steel plate 12 and falls upon a detector 14B and is converted into a pulse signal and, after being amplified by a pre-amplifier 18, its noise component is cut off by a discriminator 20 and its frequency components are divided by a frequency divider 22. The signal of the pre-amplifier 18 is processed by another discriminator 24 and another frequency divider 26 and put into a high voltage control circuit 28 to control the applied voltage to a photoelectric multiplier and obtain the stability. Another signal from the frequency divider 22 is counted by a counter 30 and processed by an arithmetic processing unit 32 according to the program prepared beforehand to obtain the plate thickness.

In detail, a steel band 3 is made to run on a roll group 4 through a final stand 6. A measured value WM is inputted to an operating means 7 from a detector 2 and li is inputted to the operating means 7 from the distance meters 5i. The true plate width value WT is approximately computed by the operating means 7. The result is outputted to the plate width control system 8. The control system 8 adjusts a looper 9 based on the difference between the objective plate width value and the computed value.
