    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a set in a projection type image display device.SOLUTION: A projection type image display device includes an image display element which receives light from a light source to form an image, and a projection optical unit magnifying and projecting the image displayed on the image display element. The projection optical unit comprises a first unit 3 which magnifies the image on the image display element by a factor of M1 to provide a first magnified image and has a positive refractive power, and a second unit 2 which magnifies the first magnified image by a factor of M2 to provide a second magnified image on a screen 6 and has a positive refractive power, where M1 is smaller than M2 and the optical axis of the first unit 3 and the optical axis of the second unit 2 are decentered.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high image quality and high reliability in a projection type video display device.SOLUTION: In this video display device, color purity is improved by cutting a yellow component from red and green colors, and a reflection-type attenuation filter which reflects a light in a green optical path is inserted to enhance a balance of light energy of the three colors. An optical phase difference compensation plate is further provided in the green optical path so as to enhance contrast performance, and at the same time, two optical parts to which ultraviolet reflection coating is applied are arranged in a blue optical path, and an ultraviolet absorbing filter is provided on an incident side of a blue liquid crystal panel in order to prolong the life of an image display element.
