    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing head from which a good bit error rate is obtained without generating baseline shift even if the maximum varying resistance amounts of two magneto-resistive elements differ in a differential-type reproducing head. SOLUTION: A differential-type reproducing head 20 has a laminated structure 400, in which a first magnetoresistance effect element 200 which has a first free layer 210, a differential gap layer 100, and a second magnetoresistance effect element 300 which has a second free layer 310 are laminated. Here the relations for the varying amount of the maximum resistance of magneto-resistive element and the magnetic domain controlling magnetic field impressed on the free layer are made to satisfy the relation: when a relation DR1>DR2 holds, HB1>HB2 is satisfied; and when DR2>DR1, HB2>HB1 is satisfied, where the varying amounts of the maximum resistance of the first magneto-resistive element 200 and the second magneto-resistive element 300 are set to DR1 and DR2, respectively, and the magnetic domain controlling magnetic field impressed to the first free layer and the magnetic domain controlling magnetic field impressed to the second free layer are set to HB1 and HB2, respectively.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing head which can achieve a high reproduction output, resolution and SNR even at a high linear recording density, and to provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device which can achieve a sufficient bit error rate.
      SOLUTION: The magnetic recording and reproducing head 10 has a differential reproducing head 20 and a recording head 25. The differential reproducing head 20 has a first magnetoresistive element 200 having a first free layer 210, a differential gap layer 100, a multilayer structure 400 where a second magnetoresistive element 300 having a second free layer 310 is laminated, a pair of electrodes 50 and 51, and a pair of magnetic shields 30 and 31 outside the multilayer structure 400. Here, a ratio (G1/b1) of an internal distance (G1) between the first free layer 210 and the second free layer 310 to a bit length (b1) is set between 0.6 to 1.6.
