    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high contrast by performing an alignment layer treatment by irradiating an alignment layer with specific linear polarized light, and making the direction of the linear polarized light parallel to the axis of transmission of a polarizing plate touching one substrate.
      SOLUTION: Two substrates 31 and 32 having alignment layer 11 and 12, used for an optical aligning method, on their surfaces are stuck across a gap to be filled with liquid crystal with the alignment layer surfaces in to form an empty cell. A polarizing plate 21 is stuck on one side of this empty cell, which is irradiated with ultraviolet ray used for the optical aligning method for the side of the polarizing plate 21. The ultraviolet light transmitted through the polarizing plate 21 becomes linear polarized light, which irradiates the alignment layer 11 and 12 on both the substrates 31 and 32. With this linear polarized light, the alignment layers 11 and 12 are given alignment restricting forces for arraying the liquid crystal in parallel or at right angles to the linear polarized light. After the alignment layer treatment is thus performed, the liquid crystal 10 is charged between the two substrates 31 and 32, so that liquid crystal molecules are aligned completely in parallel or at right angles to the polarization direction of the polarizing plate 21 stuck on the liquid crystal cell.
