    • PURPOSE:To maintain the high reflection property that a reflecting mirror has and further obtain flat, less-variation characteristics of the intensity of deflected scanning light by utilizing the interference characteristics of a thin film to an angle of incidence and polarizing reflection characteristics on a metallic surface in combination. CONSTITUTION:A polygon mirror consists of a rotary polygon mirror body 3, reflecting surfaces 4, and a specular surface protection film 5 and rotates on its axis 6 of rotation to deflect and scan laser light incident to the reflecting surfaces 4 through the protection film 5. When light is defelected and scanned by the reflecting mirror coated with the transparent protection film as mentioned above, variation in angle of incidence to the tansparent thin film is caused in addition to variation in reflection characteristics on the metallic surface, so the interference condition of the thin film varies to cause variation in reflection factor. For this purpose, S deflection scanning characteristics which increase the reflection factor with the angle of incidence are applied in combination to allow the reflection characteristics to cancel each other, and consequently there is no influence of variation in angle of incidence to make a light scan with flat characteristics of reflected light intensity. Then when the light scan is made with a high reflection factor, S polarization is employed for the scanning and the optical film thickness of the protection film at the angle of incidence when the deflecting scan is made is set almost to mlambda/2.
