      SOLUTION: A damper for supporting a water tub in a washing machine casing from below includes: a cylinder; oil in a space provided in the cylinder; a piston which is provided at the end of a rod, moves in the cylinder where the oil is sealed in and has a plurality of small holes; a flange provided at the rod and leaving a downward distance with respect to the piston; and a valve movable between the piston and the flange. The piston has at least one hole to pass the oil even if the valve contacts the piston and a notch provided in the radial direction and at the lower part of the piston and at the position of the hole. When the damper extends/contracts a length larger than a predetermined length by the vibration of the water tub in a resonance range during dehydration, damping characteristics are switched so that the damping force increases only when the water tub is moving upward.

The washing machine further comprises a first passage extending from a bottom portion of the outer tank to the circulation pump, a second passage extending from the circulation pump to an upper portion of the outer tank, and a third passage extending from the circulation pump to the bottom portion of the outer tank. In the washing step, the circulation pump is normally driven, so that the water held in the bottom portion of the outer tank can be sucked through the first passage and sent through the second passage to be sprinkled from the upper portion of the outer tank into the inner tank. In a time period between the rinsing step and the spin-drying step, the circulation pump is reversely driven, so that the water held in the bottom portion of the outer tank can be sucked through the first passage and sent through the third passage to be circulated to the bottom portion of the outer tank.
