    • A horizontal compressor including an electric motor and a compressor element mounted in a case serving concurrently as an oil sump. The compressor element includes a cylinder, a shaft having a crank, a roller fitted to the crank for eccentric rotation along inner side surfaces of the cylinder, a vane moving in reciprocatory movement in a bore of the cylinder while abutting against the roller, two side plates located on opposite sides of the cylinder, one of the two side plates being formed with a suction port for a lubricant and the other side plate being formed with a discharge port for the lubricant, and a pump chamber defined by a back of the vane, the bore of the cylinder and the two side plates. The suction port is in the form of a tapering port including a small diameter portion directly adjacent the pump chamber and a large diameter portion directly adjacent the case; the discharge port is in the form of a tapering port including a small diameter portion directly adjacent the lubricant feed passage and a large diameter portion directly adjacent the pump chamber; and a space is provided at least to the suction port in a position in which the space is in communication with the small diameter portion of the suction port.

    • A horizontal-installation-type scroll compressor requiring small installation space adopts a technique which can reduce the amount of refrigerating machine oil circulating through the refrigeration cycle. By using this scroll compressor, an air conditioner is provided whose unit body has a reduced depth and which has satisfactory ventilation efficiency and cyclic efficiency.The scroll compressor includes a closed container which is separated into a section lodging an electric motor and a compression mechanism and a section where a discharge pipe is provided. Refrigerating machine oil is stored in the section including the discharge pipe in order to ensure the requisite amount of refrigerating machine oil. An oil separation mechanism is provided in the passage of the refrigerant gas so that refrigerant gas containing little amount of refrigerating machine oil may be sent out from the discharge pipe. Further, electrical parts and this scroll compressor are arranged below a heat exchange section equipped with a heat exchanger and a centrifugal fan, thus forming an outdoor unit.

    • A rotary compressor of the invention comprises an oil separating portion and an oil collecting portion located adjacent one end of a rotary shaft closely to a motor. An oil is separated through the oil separating portion and collected in the oil collecting portion in which the one end of the rotary shaft is submerged to lubricate a third bearing. The oil separating portion serves to separate oil mist which flows with gas flow. The one end of the rotary shaft is submerged in the oil as collected in the oil collecting portion under the influence of gravity to lubricate the bearing. This arrangement provides stable lubrication of the one end of the rotary shaft. The bearing is, thus, highly reliable while the rotary compressor is running at any speeds. Also, vibrations of the shaft can substantially be reduced particularly when the rotary compressor runs at a high speed.
