摘要： Disclosed is a novel aromatic ester compound represented by the general formula ##STR1## in which Pn is a 1,4-phenylene group, R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is a group selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, cyano group, nitro group, 2,2-dicyanoethenyl group and methylsulfonyl group and the subscript n is a number of 2, 3 or 4. These aromatic ester compounds are useful as a second-order non-linear optical material in the ultraviolet wavelength range so that a resin film containing the compound has a good second-order non-linear optical coefficient d.sub.33 of 2-4.times.10.sup.-9 esu.

摘要： The present invention is intended to raise the data density during the process which comprises irradiating a thin film of a polymer compound containing an azobenzene structure with light to form an unevenness pattern on the surface thereof, whereby data are recorded. When a thin azobenzene polymer film is irradiated with a linearly polarized circular laser beam or an ellipsoidal (or rectangular) laser beam having a band of light and darkness, a surface relief pattern characterized by portions by a number of k and raised portions by a number of (k+1) arranged alternately in a straight light is obtained. By making the use of the anisotropy of this pattern, a new data recording/reproducing method can be realized.

The optical information recording/reproduction device includes: recording light generator (51) which generates a recording light (55) in a polarization state having two mutually orthogonal polarization components with a phase difference at an arbitrary polarization base; reproduction light generator (61) which generates a reproduction light (65) in a polarization state having only a single polarization component at a arbitrary polarization basis; recording medium (71) in which optical information is recorded by recording light (55) and the recorded optical information is reproduced by reproduction light; and optical information detector (polarimeter 81) which retrieves information light (72) after being applied to recording medium (71) and detects the light as optical information. Provided is also an optical information recording/reproduction method using the device.
