    • The method of making a coated paper having a thermal shrinkage force (R), which satisfies the following relationship 0≦R≦45 gf, includes coating a paper web on both sides with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol to form a coated paper web, drying the coated paper web to form a base paper with a polyvinyl alcohol coating having a coating weight on a dry basis of 0.5 to 5.0 g/m2 per side of the base paper and then applying a coating composition composed of an adhesive and at least one inorganic pigment to the base paper having the polyvinyl alcohol coating, followed by drying in order to form a coating layer on the base paper. The aqueous solution of the polyvinyl alcohol preferably has a viscosity of from 100 to 2000 mPa·s measured with a Brookfield viscometer at 60 rpm and 20° C. and the polyvinyl alcohol dissolved in the aqueous solution has a saponification degree of not less than 85 mol %. The base paper preferably has an air resistance of 1000 seconds or higher based on the measurement pursuant to JIS-P-8117.

    • The matte finished coated paper is a paper web having a smoothness of 0.5 to 20 seconds, when measured pursuant to JIS P8119, and a surface roughness Ra of 3.2 to 7.0 .mu.m, when measured pursuant to JIS B0601, provided with a surface coating on at least one side containing polyolefin resin particles, an adhesive and a pigment. The pigment includes porous particles of organic pigment material and calcium carbonate particles. The porous particles of organic pigment material have an oil absorbancy of 80 to 400 ml/100 g when measured pursuant to JIS K5101, each calcium carbonate particle has an average particle diameter of 1.0 to 10 .mu.m and each polyolefin resin particle has an average diameter of 8 to 30 .mu.m.     • The coated paper provided by this invention is a high-quality both-side coated paper for use of printing which is finished by a high-temperature calender above 100.degree. C. and excellent in gloss, print gloss, smoothness, ink receptivity, and stiffness. The both-side coated paper for use of printing according to this invention has the characteristics that after the finish, the paper density is 1.15.about.1.35 g/cm.sup.3, the gloss of coated paper surface is higher than 75%, the smoothness is lower than 20 mmHg, and further the mean value L of Clark free protruding lengths in the machine and cross directions measured pursuant to JIS P8143 A can satisfy the following equation (1) below: L>1.28X+45 (1), where L=Mean value of Clark free protruding lengths in the machine and cross directions (mm), and X=Product basis weight (g/m.sup.2), and that the outermost coating layer on both sides of said coated paper contains the kaolin as a pigment whose average particle diameter is 0.5.about.1.0 .mu.m, and content ratio is 50-80 wt % for the particles smaller than 1 .mu.m in diameter and 5% or less than 5% for the particles larger than 3 .mu.m in diameter, in an amount of 40.about.90 wt % of the total pigment used; the copolymer latex with a Tg of 25.degree..about.50.degree. C. as the binder, in an amount of 5.about.30 wt % in terms of solid matter of the total pigment contained; and the coating weight per surface is 15.about.30 g/m.sup.2 after the coating material is dried.
