    • An outboard motor has a first case member and a second case member connected to the first case member to form an enclosure having an inner space in which is mounted an engine. The first case member has an air intake hole for taking air into the inner space and a vent hole for exhausting the air after it circulates in the inner space to cool the interior of the inner space. An alternator is disposed in the inner space of the enclosure and has a hollow casing, air passage holes formed in the hollow casing, and cooling fans for drawing air from the air passage holes into the hollow casing to cool the alternator. A cover member is disposed in the inner space of the enclosure and covers at least a portion of the alternator. The cover member has a vent hole communicating with the vent hole of the first case member, an upper wall, a side wall extending from the upper wall and surrounding the portion of the alternator, and air passage holes formed in the side wall for introducing air therethrough into the cover member and through the air passage holes of the alternator hollow casing to cool the alternator before the air is discharged from the vent hole of the cover member. An electric equipment box is disposed in the engine room at a position intermediate the air intake hole of the engine cover and the alternator.

    • In a water-cooled multi-cylinder vertical engine for an outboard engine system, cooling water having passed through an exhaust-manifold cooling water jacket for cooling an exhaust passage within an engine room is supplied to a cylinder-block cooling water jacket provided in a cylinder block through water supply pipes, a branching member and two upper and lower couplings. In this case, the lower coupling is locked below the center of a lowermost cylinder to minimize unevenness in flow rate of the cooling water flowing through a water jacket on opposite left and right sides of a cylinder toward a cooling water outlet provided at an upper portion thereof, thereby making uniform the distribution of the temperature around a combustion chamber, leading to an enhancement in cooling effect.

    • A first chain mechanism for transmitting the rotation of a crankshaft of an vertical engine to a camshaft and a second chain mechanism for transmitting the rotation of the crankshaft to a balancer shaft are forcibly lubricated by an oil injected by first, second and third oil jets mounted within a chain chamber. The first, second and third oil jets are disposed at locations closer to the crankshaft, the cam shaft and the balancer shaft, respectively, and the first and second oil jets are disposed inside a travel locus for a timing chain. Thus, the chain mechanisms disposed in a plane of the vertical engine can be lubricated effectively.

    • In an engine, a cover member closing an opening in an engine block is integrally formed with supporting arms extending radially outwards beyond an outer periphery of a flywheel mounted on a crankshaft supported at its one end on the cover member, and a recoil starter located axially outside the flywheel is supported on the supporting arms. Thus, the recoils starter can be supported easily and reliably without provision of a special mounting bracket and a stay and while preventing the interference with the flywheel. Moreover, the coaxiality of the recoil starter and the crankshaft can be ensured.

    • An outboard motor hydraulic mechanism having a hydraulic actuator moving the outboard motor about a rotary shaft relative to a boat the motor is mounted on and a hydraulic pump and a plurality of electric motors connected to the pump. A number of the motors to be operated is determined based on an estimated load acting on the actuator, output shafts of the motors are aligned coaxially with a drive shaft of the pump, and they are directly connected with each other. This ensures that the operator is prevented from having an unpleasant feeling, lowers electric power consumption by the motors, and reduces the number of components and simplifies the structure of the mechanism.
