    • A liquid crystal display device can suppress pixel-based gradation fluctuations observed upon change in angle of view with increased size as it meets wide angle of view characteristics required of a large-sized liquid crystal display device. A device in which a liquid crystal material is sealed between a pair of substrates 31, 32, a plurality of pixel electrodes 38 for applying voltage across the liquid crystal material is arranged on the substrate 31, a common electrode 12 for applying a voltage common to the pixel electrodes 38 is arranged on the substrate 32, and in which a gate line 22 and a drain line 23 of a switching element adapted to control the voltage applied across the pixel electrodes 38 are provided for extending substantially at right angles to each other. In the device, orientation of the liquid crystal molecules 18 neighboring to the pixel electrode 38 is perpendicular to that of liquid crystal molecules 19 neighboring to the common electrode 12, while the respective orientations are substantially parallel to the direction of the gate line 22 or that of the drain line 23.

    • A liquid crystal layer is sandwiched between two substrates of glass or the like and a gate terminal, a gate wiring, a control electrode and a drain terminal are arranged on the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal display device further has a control electrode terminal of the control electrode which is in an independent condition without crossing the gate wiring. A terminal part including this control electrode terminal and the gate terminal as well as the drain terminal is arranged on the outer side of the substrate panel. According to this construction, an arbitrary voltage can be applied to the control electrode so that the diagonal electrical field, which is necessary for the orientation division, can be set optimum in the intensity. Thereby the orientation division can be carried out properly. In addition, since there is no overlapping between the control electrode, including wiring and terminals, and the gate wiring, the short circuit problem can be alleviated to create good manufacturing yield of the liquid crystal display device.

    • A liquid crystal display and a method of operating such liquid crystal display in which display operation is performed by changing a director of said liquid crystal molecules mainly in a plane parallel to first and second substrate forming a liquid crystal display panel. The liquid crystal display comprises: a first common electrode disposed on the side of said first substrate; an insulating layer formed on the first common electrode; at least one pixel electrodes each of which is formed on the insulating layer and has a plurality of opening portions; a second common electrode disposed on the side of the second substrate. The first common electrode comprises at least a particular portion formed in a particular area which extends from a non-opening portion to an opening portion of the pixel electrode and in which the first common electrode overlaps the non-opening portion in a cross section perpendicular to the substrates.

    • An image forming apparatus includes an image reader, an image forming unit, a sheet discharge device, a sheet receiver, and a sheet moving mechanism. The image reader provided substantially at an upper portion of the image forming apparatus reads an image of a document. The image forming unit disposed substantially below the image reader through some space forms an image based on image information read by the image reader and transfers the image onto a recording medium. The sheet discharge device discharges the recording medium on which an image is formed. The sheet receiver provided in the space between an upper portion of the image forming unit and a bottom portion of the image reader receives the recording medium discharged by the sheet discharge device. The sheet moving mechanism moves the recording medium that is discharged onto the sheet receiver by the sheet discharge device in a desired direction.
