    • A disk drive comprises a recording medium, spinning means, a head supporting device having a support arm disposed in a rotatable manner about a bearing unit in a radial direction as well as a perpendicular direction to a writing surface of the recording medium, and rotating means for rotating the support arm in the radial direction of the recording medium. A shape of the housing is defined based on a first straight line tangent to both an outermost rim of the rotating means and an outer periphery of the recording medium, and according to a quadrilateral comprised of the first straight line, a second straight line tangent to the outer periphery of the recording medium and perpendicular to the first straight line, a third straight line tangent to the outermost rim of the rotating means and perpendicular to the first straight line, and a fourth straight line tangent to the outer periphery of the recording medium and parallel with the first straight line, thereby realizing the disk drive that is compatible in external size with memory cards.

    • A voice coil motor capable of quickly and precisely positioning a magnetic head with high precision is provided with a bearing rotatably supporting a head carriage without being influenced by a radial load. Two coils having radial sections contributing to generate a torque are provided to be rotatable in a magnetic space formed by a permanent magnet and a pair of yokes, and are layered along a central rotating axis in such a manner that an extension angle of the radial sections of one coil differs in direction from that of the radial sections of the other coil. When electric current flows, no radial load works, and a resultant force generated in these coils can be a couple of forces in the direction vertical to the movement direction of the magnetic head, so that the magnetic head can be quickly positioned with high precision, realizing a small magnetic disk device.

Rotor hub 2 has hollow cylinder portion 2a near central axis 1 of rotation, and cylindrical portion 7b of support column 7 secured to chassis 8 is positioned inside the hollow space of cylinder portion 2a without being in contact thereto. Cover 18 is placed with a bottom side of abutment portion 18b kept in abutment upon an upper end of cylindrical portion 7b of support column 7 with a predetermined small clearance provided between upper end 2c of rotor hub 2 and the bottom side of abutment portion 18b.
