    • To provide ignition energy to respective spark plugs of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine (ICE) without a distributor, winding groups, each including a primary and secondary winding, are located on respective core portions of an iron core, which core portions are coupled together by zones (a, b, c) of high magnetic reluctance, or low magnetic flux conductivity; the winding groups can be located on L cores (16, 17) with two high-reluctance gaps between the ends of the facing L cores (FIG. 1) or on a common U core (28, 30, 29) with a cross yoke (31) spaced from the ends of the legs of the U. Interruption of current flow through the primary of any one of the winding groups will then not induce in the secondary of the other winding group a voltage high enough to cause spark-over at the other secondary; free-wheeling diodes (14, 22), connected across the primaries, can suppress current flow in the primary not being interrupted; and diodes (12, 13; 25, 26), serially connected with spark plugs, likewise suppress spurious spark-over.

    • To provide for reliable connection under conditions of extremes of shock and vibration, an axially acting contact spring is located between the movable electrode, typically connected to the wire, and the fixed electrode, then forming the connection in the distributor cap, the spring forming a current carrying contact element while exerting axially directed bias force; releasable holding means releasably, positively connect the cable and the socket of the distributor cap so that the spring can act as a resilient contact element. These releasable means may be either magnetic force means, a bayonet connection, a snap catch, or a collar fixed to the wire which is secured by a holder to the cap, the spring, in all instances, being interposed between the central connecting wire of the cable and the fixed terminal within the distributor cap.

    • An engine driven rotor has pairs of arms of different lengths passing by the stator core teeth with respectively different clearances. The stator teeth carry pick-up coils that are connected in series-aiding relation. Although the stator teeth are uniformly spaced, the rotor arms, that are equal in number to the stator teeth, have the longer pair angularly offset from equiangular relation to the shorter pair in such a way that when the rotor moves in its normal direction, a weak pulse is followed by a stronger one and this pattern is repeated four times per revolution. The output of the coils is supplied to a threshold switch, which will be triggered on the second of the pair of pulses at low rotation speeds of the rotor and on the first of the pair of pulses at high speeds.
