    • A rotating carousel and bag handling apparatus comprising a rotating carriage plate driven by a motor and carrying a plurality of trays filled with bags. The trays are each maintained in a stable, level position by a timing collar, belt, and pulley assembly connected to each tray. As successive bag trays are rotated to a pickup position adjacent a bag handling mechanism, a brake assembly momentarily stops the motion of the bag carousel sufficient for a bag handling arm to pivot down over one of the bag trays, and for a plurality of bag grippers to grip and hold the top bag in that tray. The bag handling arm then pivots back upwardly and away from the tray carrying the bag onto a bag support assembly displaced over the conveyor belt and mounted on a pair of rocker arms, with the longitudinal edge of the bag being positioned adjacent to a side retaining wall on the conveyor belt. As the bag is released, the rocker arms and bag support assembly pivot away from the side retaining wall of the conveyor belt, allowing the bag to slide off the bag support assembly and lay flat on the conveyor belt in a spaced-apart or overlapping relationship to a previously transferred bag.

    • The invention shows a device for hanging bags to be filled. A fold-down arm with suction cups grabs the front bag of a vertically oriented stack of bags and folds the top portion of the bag down over a drum. The top edge of the bag is then registered at a predetermined position at which point a delivery and hanging arm removes the bag from the fold-down arm and hangs it on a spout which is movable between first and second positions. A Duplex system may be utilized wherein two sets of the above mentioned parts are located parallel to one another and which discharge filled bags concurrently into a sealing machine.

    • A method and apparatus adapted for processing tags, cards, or the like are disclosed herein. The apparatus preferably comprises a magazine for storing a predetermined quantity of tags and an associated slotted gate, feed dispensing system for automatically moving tags out of the magazine. In one form of the invention a swinging arm for moving tags outputted from the feed gate to a desired external station is provided. The feed gate preferably comprises a slidable push plate which reciprocally, slidably moves within an elongated channel provided adjacent the magazine. Each time the push plate goes through a cycle a single tag (or group of tags) is outputted from the magazine through the feed gate dispensing apparatus to a position external of the tag feeder. In one form of the invention a printing device is associated with the feed gate for printing information on tags before delivery to the desired external station.

    • A bag filling machine of the type having a discharge spout with clamps to hold a bag mouth on the spout is disclosed as incorporating gusset pleat gripping assemblies on opposite sides of the spout. Each of those assemblies has a pair of cooperatively actuable gusset gripping members operable between open and closed positions to selectively and independently grip each of the two gusset pleats on opposite sides of a gusseted bag and to pull those pleats apart to fully open positions. This increases the effective, material-receiving area of the bag mouth as it is opened with the opening of the spout to dispense granular material into the bag. A gusset tucker is also utilized on each side of the discharge spout in cooperative juxtaposition to the gusset pleat gripping assemblies. The gusset tuckers are moved inwardly towards each other and towards the bag to engage in the fold between the two gusset pleats on each side of the bag as the bag top is flattened to a closed position after being filled on a spout. This action of the gusset tuckers insures that the gusset pleats will be fully returned to their normal shape with a complete V-fold therebetween, after the bag has been spread open by the gusset gripping members. An improved cylinder structure and gusset wedge apparatus are also disclosed herein, the cylinder structure and gusset wedge apparatus functioning together to increase the reliability of the placement of the bags upon the spout of the bag filling machine at the start of the bag filling cycle.

    • A product settler comprising a pair of spaced-apart carriages mounted for independent reciprocal movement in a generally vertical direction relative to a surrounding frame assembly. Each carriage has a longitudinal beam generally traversing the length of the product settler and disposed on opposing sides of an intermediate zone. Extending inwardly from each beam are a plurality of rollers, each roller being mounted for rotational movement about its longitudinal axis, and extending substantially across the intermediate zone. The rollers are generally parallel to one another and preferably disposed within a horizontal plane, the rollers associated with one carriage being interspersed in a one-to-one ratio with the rollers of the opposing carriage. The carriages and rollers may be moved between completely raised and completely lowered positions at controlled rates of descent and ascent, the rollers being maintained in contact with or close proximity to the bottom of the bag and alternatingly reciprocated or oscillated to produce vibrations or discreet striking motions to settle the product within the bag. When moved to the completely lowered position, the underside of each roller contacts the top surface of one of two spaced-apart frictional drive belts moving in a closed path, contact with the drive belts thereby causing the rollers to rotate and carry the bag to a conveyor belt positioned adjacent to the downline end of the product settler. The sets of rollers may be disposed in varying staggered configurations, and be slanted across or along the intermediate zone.

    • A tag feeding machine particularly adapted for separating thin paper tags, of the type applied to feed bags, one at a time from a stack. A tag engaging member mounted on a movable arm and having a friction contact surface thereon is movable through a predetermined path on a displacement stroke wherein it contacts the first tag in a stack and buckles its leading edge out from engagement by a leading edge retaining member on a tag holder. As the tag engaging member moves back through a return stroke to a rest position, it carries the separated tag's leading edge forwardly to a freely disposed pickup location. Tag pickup means in the form of a swingable delivery arm having a pickup device on one end grips the freed leading edge of a separated tag and delivers it to an application location.A printing head positioned adjacent the rear or trailing end of stacked tags is movable by power means on a printing stroke to apply printed matter to the first tag in a stack immediately prior to the buckling and separating of the leading edge of the first tag by the movement of the aforesaid tag engaging member on its displacement stroke.
