    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a pink discharge and a short lamp life by a temperature difference on a bulb axis in a backlight unit using many bent bulb fluorescent lamps.
      SOLUTION: A lighting device has a plurality of juxtaposed fluorescent lamps each so constructed that a phosphor coating is formed over an inner wall of a bent glass bulb, one or more kinds of rare gases or mercury are sealed in, lead wires are hermetically sealed in both glass bulb ends, electrodes are connected to the ends of the lead wires in the glass bulb, and feeder lead wires are connected to the outer ends of the lead wires. The bulb surface temperature of the bend of the bent glass bulb is lower than the bulb surface temperature of the straight part of the bent glass bulb by less than 10°C. The absolute temperature of the straight part is kept at 50°C or higher. The surface of the bend of the bent glass bulb is shielded to bring the bulb surface brightness thereof to 70% or lower of the bulb surface brightness of the straight part.
