    • A method in which, during an optimal power calibration (OPC) process, an optical disk drive performs a plurality of write tests to an optical disk at a plurality of test powers and measures a corresponding plurality of modulation signal strength values of the optical disk for the plurality of write tests to generate a modulation signal strength versus power curve. The method then determines possible gamma lines corresponding to considered powers, and selects a considered power as a target power of the optical disk drive when a possible gamma line is substantially tangential to the modulation signal strength versus power curve at the considered power. According to the method, powers within a domain of the plurality of test powers are considered until a considered power is selected as the target power for the optical disk.

    • The invention is an offset setting system for an optical reading/writing apparatus having an optical pickup head reading/writing digital data under a predetermined velocity on an optical storage media. The apparatus sets the offset including a plurality of buffer blocks when the pickup head crosses storage tracks each time on the media and stop on a target storage track. The offset is to steady the pickup head to read/write data on a target block of the target storage track. A buffer time estimating module estimates an average time for the pickup head crossing a buffer block under a predetermined velocity, defining as a buffer time. The buffer blocks setting module records a steady time for the pickup head steadying to read/write data on the target block, and sets the number of the buffer blocks by a predetermined setting process in the offset based on the buffer time and the steady time.

An optical recording apparatus utilizes a low-speed, peak-hold circuit to obtain and output a maximum of a front photodiode output signal during a predetermined window or plurality of windows of a total duration long enough to allow maximum peak-hold signal to stabilize. After stabilization, the maximum peak-hold signal is sampled and held in a sample and hold circuit. A reset then clears the signal and reinitializes the peak-hold circuit. In accordance with the difference between a reference voltage and the held peak-hold signal, a feedback controller unit outputs the required current level into a driving unit for producing desired recording pulses into a laser diode for recording information pits into an optical disc. A calibration gain may be used when, due to insufficient FPD response speed, the held signal is different than the real optical power output.

    • A firmware code structuring method and related apparatus includes a plurality of subroutines to define various operations of the hardware circuit, and the subroutines are grouped in several different levels. A subroutine of a lower level defines a simpler operation of the hardware circuit, and a higher-level subroutine calls a plurality of lower level subroutines to define more complicated operations of the hardware circuit. When the lower level subroutines are executed, they store results of corresponding operations in an error code. If certain operations performed do not achieve expected results, a corresponding recovery operation is performed by the hardware circuit. To control the hardware to perform the required recovery operations, an error-handler is executed to make the hardware circuit perform recovery operations corresponding to lower level subroutines called in a higher level subroutine according to the error code after the higher level subroutine is finished.
