    • A method and apparatus for effectuating the reception and local storage of source information signals representative of a media program transmitted from a source information network preferably over a cable television channel on a pay-per-view basis is disclosed. A local intelligent set-top control unit communicates with a remote information network and a local storage device to coordinate the transmission of customer ordered media programs from the information network for storage on the local storage device. The local storage device is preferably a standard video cassette recorder (VCR) providing full VCR control functionality when presenting a stored media program on a television. A digital or optical data storage disk drive system may alternatively be employed to store source information signals downloaded from the remote information network. The intelligent set-top control unit communicates a pay-per-view billing signal to the information network upon playing of a downloaded media program, and provides protection against unauthorized copying. In an alternative configuration, a set-top control card is installed into a host computer system to coordinate the reception and local storage of downloaded media programs, and preferably provides a platform for interfacing with other home communication and electronic systems.

    • A multimedia server system and a method for communicating multimedia programming to distantly situated media control systems are disclosed. The multimedia server system includes a mass storage library for storing a plurality of multimedia programs. A multimedia program is coded in accordance with a predetermined compression standard and stored in a compressed digital format as sequentially ordered discrete program segments in the mass storage library, with each of program segments being representative of a unique portion of the multimedia program. A video parser organizes the sequentially ordered program segments of a multimedia program into a custom ordered series of program segments preferably including non-sequentially and sequentially ordered program segments in accordance with configuration parameters associated with the configuration and presentation control features of a media control system requesting the multimedia program. Concurrent transmission of a plurality of custom ordered series of program segments to a corresponding plurality of distantly located media control systems is facilitated by an asynchronous transfer mode distribution switch. The custom ordered series of program segments are processed by a local media control system to provide for the sequential presentation of the program segments on a local display and for providing local VCR-type control functions.

    • A multimedia direct access storage device and a method for transferring source program signals representative of a compressed digital multimedia program to and from the direct access storage device are disclosed. A multimedia program is transmitted from a multimedia server as a custom ordered series of discrete program segments and received by the multimedia direct access storage device, which buffers the compressed program segments for subsequent presentation on a local display monitor. The multimedia direct access storage device is preferably incorporated as a component of a local set-top control system for buffering a predetermined number of compressed program segments received from the multimedia server, some of which may be non-sequentially ordered and others of which may be sequentially ordered. A novel formatting methodology provides for the sequential presentation of the program segments asynchronously distributed on one or more data storage disks disposed in the direct access storage device. A user-definable presentation control window for performing local VCR-type presentation control functions for the portion of a multimedia program buffered in the direct access storage device is also provided through the novel formatting methodology. The novel formatting methodology also provides concurrent presentation and buffering of program segments received from the multimedia server for on-demand viewing of a selected multimedia program.
