    • The present invention relates to an improved location process for determining the location of mobile stations when a GSM network is extended by other access networks, for example unlicensed radio access networks. An access network controller supporting a connection with the mobile station sends a location service entity a location request that includes information indicative of at least one positioning method supported by the network element for a particular mobile station. By providing the location service entities with information on the location methods to use, there is no need to configure the location service entities with this information in advance. Moreover, the process is flexible and can be tailored to the network element making the request and thus to the type of connection actually used by the mobile station. There is no need for the location entities to launch several location methods before retrieving sufficiently accurate information since the most suitable methods are communicated in advance.

    • An end node in a packet-switched network is proposed wherein the end node is arranged to exchange packets consisting of a packet header and payload data with a server node connected to the packet-switched network. The end node includes at least one module adapted to extract quality of service parameter values from the headers of packets received over the packet-switched network and to insert the extracted quality of service parameter value in the headers of packets destined for transmission to the server node over the packet-switched network. In this manner the end node automatically adapts the quality of service parameters received over the packet-switched network to correspond with the type of quality of service defined in received packets. Such a system means that only the server node need be configured with the quality of service parameters applicable on the particular packet switched network, so greatly reducing the installation and configuration overheads in a multi-user network.

    • An unlicensed-radio access network is connected to a packet service node in a core network portion of a licensed mobile network. The unlicensed-radio access network includes an access controller connected to the core network portion and having a packet controller, a fixed broadband network connected to the access controller and having a plurality of access points. Each of the access points defines a mini-cell coverage area and supports an unlicensed-radio interface permitting communication of packet data between mobile stations located within a respective mini-cell and the access controller. In accordance with the invention the access controller comprises a database for storing the identification of mobile stations in association with packet path information addressing said mobile station on the fixed broadband network.

    • A system and method in an unlicensed-radio access network for transporting a circuit-switched payload between an access network controller and a mobile station utilizing a packet-based transmission protocol. The controller sends to the mobile station, a channel activation message that includes a minimum acceptable sample size of the circuit-switched payload to be included in each packet. The mobile station determines whether it can support communications utilizing the minimum acceptable sample size, and if not, selects a larger sample size. The mobile station may send an acknowledgment message that indicates the sample size to be utilized. Alternatively, the mobile station begins transmitting packets, and the controller analyzes received packets to determine the sample size the mobile station is using. The controller then encodes transmissions to the mobile station utilizing the determined sample size.
