    • A system for integrating a wireless network with wired field devices (101a-101m) includes a field unit (102a-102n) that communicates with the wired field devices (101a-101m) using a first wired field device protocol. A gateway (106a-106b) wirelessly communicates with the field unit (102a-102n) and communicates over a network (118) using one or more second wired field device protocols. The gateway (106a-106b) also converts between the first wired field device protocol and the one or more second wired field device protocols. The gateway (106a-106b) could further permit access to the wired field devices (101a-101m) by a component of the process control system (100), such as a process controller (104), asset management tool (122), or configuration tool (124), that does not support the first wired field device protocol. At least one of the field unit (102a-102n) and the gateway (106a-106b) could appear as a multiplexer or linking device to the component of the process control system (100), such as a HART multiplexer or a Foundation Fieldbus or Profibus linking device.

    • An apparatus (106a-106b) is provided for facilitating integration of a wireless field device (102a-102n), such as a wireless sensor or actuator, and a wired protocol that is used in a process control system (100). The apparatus (106a-106b) supports a wireless field device protocol for communicating with the wireless field device (102a-102n). The apparatus (106a-106b) also supports a wired field device protocol for communicating with other components of the process control system (100) over a network (118). The apparatus (106a-106b) is adapted to map a wireless application model associated with the wireless field device protocol to a wired application model associated with the wired field device protocol. The apparatus (106a-106b) may actually support multiple mappings from the wireless application model to wired application models associated with multiple wired field device protocols. As particular examples, the wired field device protocol (s) could include the HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, and/or Modbus protocols. The network (118) may represent an Ethernet network or a serial network.

The method also includes normalizing (506) the data from the wireless field devices using one or more templates associated with the wireless field devices. The method further includes transmitting (510) the normalized data in a unified format. The method could also include generating the one or more templates using device description (DD) files associated with the wireless field devices. Each template may provide, for one wireless field device or type of wireless field device, (i) an indication of a type of data provided by the wireless field device or type of wireless field device, (ii) a range of data provided by the wireless field device or type of wireless field device, and (iii) how to normalize data from the wireless field device or type of wireless field device into the unified format.
