    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a drive shaft which can improve dimensional accuracy without relying upon cutting and increasing strength by suppressing the nonuniformness of quenching.SOLUTION: The maximum and minimum diameters of a solid bar body 10 (shaft-like body) conveyed in the longitudinal direction are obtained by measuring the diameter at a same portion from multiple directions, and the difference between the maximum and minimum diameters (diameter difference) is obtained. A product the deviated diameter difference of which is within a preset threshold is selected as an acceptable one, and a product the deviated diameter difference of which exceeds the threshold is selected as a rejected one. The rejected one is excluded, and the acceptable one is cut off, machined, and induction hardened. Consequently, a drive shaft is obtained from the acceptable product.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique which reduces both a material cost and a processing cost in an outer ring of a universal joint consisting of a cup part and a hollow part.
      SOLUTION: In an intermediate product 10 before a finishing process of the outer ring of the universal joint, which consists of the cup part 11 and the hollow shaft part 12 extending from this cup part 11, a plurality of guide grooves extending in the axial direction are provided inside the cup part. Recessed grooves 13, 13 are formed between a pair of guide grooves on the cup part by a molding roller so as to protrude to the radius center, and at the end remotest from the hollow shaft part 12, protruding parts 14 are formed such that the parts of the recessed grooves 13 protrude in the axial direction from the parts of the guide grooves. The cup part and the hollow shaft parts are integrally molded thereby, so that a process of connecting the hollow shaft part to the cup part is not required, and the processing cost is reduced. The cup part and the hollow shaft part are integrated, so that the yield of a material is good and the material cost is reduced.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce the outer ring member of a constant velocity joint by subjecting a steel material to plastic deformation working.
      SOLUTION: A workpiece heated to a suitable temperature which is equal to or higher or lower than an Ac1 point in the first stage S1 and plastically deformed into the shape of an outer ring member by plastic deformation working is introduced into a heat treatment furnace in a state where the workpiece still retains the heat applied thereto. In the heat treatment furnace, the outer ring member is heated up to a temperature between an Ac1 point and an Ac3 point, so as to be held (second stage S2). For heating-up/holding, it takes only 10 min or less, and preferably about 3 min. The outer ring member is next subjected to annealing (third stage S3) preferably at a cooling rate of 5 to 45°C/min, and, more preferably, at 5 to 10°C/min.
