    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detection device capable of detecting vehicles present in a dead zone together with moving directions and moving speeds thereof.
      SOLUTION: The vehicles irradiate laser beam indicating the presence of the vehicles from laser beam transmitters 2 toward a road surface, and recognize the laser beam reflected on the road surface by an infrared ray camera 3. When the laser beam recognized by a laser beam determination means 11 is determined to be the laser beam irradiated from the other vehicle than the vehicle, the moving direction and moving speed of the other vehicle are detected by a running state detection means 12 based on at least one of the moving locus, shape, and lighting state of the recognized laser beam. Also, the running state detection means 12 displays, in real time, the thus obtained, for example, moving speed at which the other vehicle approaches an intersection on a monitor 6. Thus, the operator of the vehicle determines the running state of the other vehicle by using the approaching speed of the other vehicle and its variation amount so that the vehicle can more safely enter and pass the intersection.

When a steering wheel is suddenly turned right in order to evade a forward obstacle detected by a driver at the time of traveling on a road curved right, an actual large right yaw rate is generated and left operation torque is applied to a steering means 15 so as to restore the vehicle to a correct route. When the steering angular velocity detected by a steering angular velocity sensor 17 exceeds a reference value, steering assist torque is compensated so as to assist the evading operation and steering torque is canceled.
