摘要： A flushable catheter configured to facilitate flushing of the catheter down the toilet and for disposal thereof. The flushable catheter optionally having a selected density such that the catheter has a desired buoyancy relative to water. Alternatively or in addition to having a selected density, the flushable catheter optionally includes a water capture element that is contacted by flushing water and captures the force of the flushing water to propel the catheter down the toilet and/or across a trapway/U-bend sewer pipe.

摘要： This is a water disintegrable, flushable catheter that will dissolve or biodegrade in water. It is coated with a hydrophilic coating and will achieve lubricity values typical of a hydrophilic catheter. The catheter may be formed of a bi-layer tube that has a biodegradable outer layer such as polylactic acid and a purely water disintegrable inner layer, e.g., polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). The outer layer will support the hydrophilic coating even when it's wetted and thus acts as a stable primer layer for hydrophilic style coatings. The outer layer bonds well to the water disintegrable inner layer but also allows a hydrophilic coating to be applied on top. The outer layer acts as a temporary water barrier. This water barrier allows the hydrophilic coating to be hydrated prior to use but prevents water molecules from attacking the PVOH inner layer. Alternatively, a hydrophilic coating that bonds to either the tubing directly or a via a primer layer but unlike typical hydrophilic coatings the coating is pre- activated by organic activation agents other than water and thus the catheter does not break down in the packaging or sterilization

摘要： A medical device such as a catheter in a liquid and vapor impermeable package, the device being contained in a low surface energy sleeve or compartment that is liquid impermeable and vapor permeable. Water vapor molecules from a liquid provided within the package exteriorly of the sleeve or compartment migrate across the sleeve or compartment to an interior thereof, thereby creating and maintaining a moist environment for the device, which may include activating a hydrophilic coating of the catheter. Water molecules are transported through the sleeve from an exterior of the sleeve or compartment to the interior of the sleeve compartment. Upon removal of the device from the package, the exterior of the sleeve or compartment is drier to the touch.

摘要： A package for a hydrophilic coated catheter includes a sleeve with liquid water impermeable and water vapor impermeable walls. A liquid flow interfering element, such as a liquid water impermeable, vapor permeable membrane is provided within the sleeve. The sleeve may include a wicking element that is isolated from the catheter. Liquid water is provided on one side of the liquid flow interfering element. As the liquid water changes phase to a vapor, the vapor permeates through the liquid flow interfering element and activates the hydrophilic coating. The sleeve is collapsible during manipulation of the catheter through the wall of the sleeve so as to advance the catheter through an insertion tip to facilitate urethral insertion, with the exterior of the sleeve walls remaining dry to the touch. A funnel end of the catheter may remain in communication with the sleeve, such that the sleeve may be used to direct the flow of urine.

The medical devices are made at least in part of material that when introduced into water (of a toilet) disintegrate and/or fragment or are fragmentable before or after introduction into water such that they can be easily carried by the water through the disposal system.
