    • A hot water cylinder (1) includes two zones (2), (3), for hot water storage. The upper zone (2) is physically separated from the lower zone (3) by a dome shaped barrier plate (4). Fluid communication between the two zones (2), (3) is allowed via a flow port (5) at the top of the dome-shaped barrier (4) The upper zone (2) includes two direct heating devices (6), (7) to heat the water and the lower zone (3) includes a heating coil (8) that is arranged to be connected to a heat exchanger forming part of a system for waste water recycling and heat recovery. The dome shaped barrier (4) is arranged to present a physical barrier between two zones (2), (3) containing fluid at different temperatures. The use of a physical barrier (4) having a flow port (5) putting the two zones (2), (3) in fluid communication helps to avoid the forming of layers that may act as barriers to water mixing.which could lead to an inefficient heating and storage system. The heating coil (8) in the lower zone (3) acts as a pre-heater for the water in the zone (3) which means that the temperature gradient to be delivered by the heating devices (6), (7) in the upper zone (2) is considerably reduced.

    • Apparatus for conveying a water-soluble or water swellable particulate material to a make up unit used in the hydration or dissolution of said material comprising: a scroll conveying line (6) comprising a duct (6A) defined by a wall and a scroll conveyor (6B) within said duct, wherein the scroll conveying line has an inlet (6D) through which material enters and an outlet (6C) through which the material leaves the scroll conveying line, and an air conveying line (3) comprising a duct through which an air stream conveys the material to a make up unit (18) in which the material is hydrated or dissolved to form an aqueous dilution or aqueous solution, in which the scroll conveying line (6) is provided with a means for ensuring the material substantially fills the space between the scroll conveyor and the wall of the duct at least at the outlet end of the conveying line, wherein the means is selected from, (a) the scroll conveying line (6) or outlet (6C) is in communication with an element that restricts the flow of material from the outlet, and/or (b) the scroll conveying line (6) is mounted at a gradient or a substantially vertical orientation, such that the outlet (6C) is positioned higher than the inlet (6D).     • A waste water recycling and heat recovery system (10) comprises a pair of linked tanks (11 ), (12). The larger tank (11) is supplied with used bath and shower water while the smaller tank (12) is supplied from the cold water supply. A heat exchanger (19) is housed in the larger tank (11) and connects to an external hot water tank. Water is supplied from the system to toilets under control of a control system (25). In operation waste bath and shower water enters the system and has heat extracted from it by the heat exchanger (19) to pre heat the external hot water tank. The system provides a supply for toilets thus ensuring that both heat and the water itself from baths and showers is recycled. The clean water supply forms a layer at the bottom of the tanks which creates a cold water buffer which allows for a large temperature differential to exist between the tanks to allow effective extraction of heat from the water in the large tank (11). The system also works in conjunction with a solar panel system, the control system (25) monitors which part of the composite system has the highest temperature and operates so as to transfer that heat first to the external hot water tank transferring to the other source as the relative temperatures change.
