    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the tip position and the winding direction of a coil relatively quickly and accurately by detecting distance to a coil outer surface by a plurality of means that are arranged outside a plate material that is wound in a coil shape. SOLUTION: First, an elevating device 10 is operated and a detector support bracket 8 is elevated and then distance detectors 7a and 7b at the tip are lowered to a position that is at a constant distance from the surface of a coil 1. A cradle roll 2 is driven and the coil 1 is rotated in a constant direction, distances (a) and (b) to the surface of the coil 1 are measured by the detectors 7a and 7b, and the difference (c=a-b) is calculated. Then, when the absolute value of (c) becomes larger than a specific threshold value, the position is judged to be a coil tip position. Then, the direction is judged to be either a forward- winding direction or a backward-winding direction according to whether the value of (c) is positive or negative. Then, finally, the coil 1 is transferred to a coil turner via the truck of, for example, automatic control.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a continuous casting apparatus, in which a gap of abutting parts between a short side mold and a long side mold at the time of casting is made to be as smaller as possible and troubles of the development of the flash and breakout, etc., caused by penetrating phenomenon of molten steel into the gap can be prevented and the stable casting in high speed can be executed. CONSTITUTION:A fixed mold 100 is formed with, one pair of the faced short side molds 1 having large width at the upper part and gradually narrowing from the molten metal surface toward the casting direction and one pair of the faced long side molds 2 interposing the short side molds 1 so as to almost abut from the width direction. Then, the radius of curvature on the side surface of the short side mold 1 is smaller than the radius of curvature of the surface of the long side mold 2 abutted on the short side mold 1, and the center of curvature on the side surface of the short side mold 1 is eccentrically positioned upward by a prescribed eccentric distance from the center of curvature on the surface of the long side mold 2.
