    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently ensure the soundness of the structure of a spacer in a fuel assembly in which shorter fuel rods are arranged in the outermost circumference of a lattice-shaped arrangement and in a position adjacent to a water rod and in which spacer tubular members in lattice positions of the shorter fuel rods are removed so as to reduce pressure loss. SOLUTION: This fuel assembly is provided with fuel rods which contain shorter fuel rods in the outermost circumferential region. In addition, the fuel assembly is provided with a water rod. In addition, the fuel assembly is provided with fuel spacers which are installed in a plurality of places in the axial direction. In the fuel spacers in the fuel assembly which is provided with mutually coupled cells 9 and bands 11, spacers 4B which are situated in the upper part from the upper end of the shorter fuel rods in the outermost circumferential region omit cells 9 in first lattice positions 18a to 18d. The bands 11 are bonded to outer circumferential faces of the cells 9 in third lattice positions 18o to 18r other than the first lattice positions 18a to 18d and second lattice positions 18g to 18n which are adjacent to both sides of them when split pieces 11A are welded and bonded.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce the inner pressure of fuel rod while avoiding contact of a plenum spring with the outer circumferential part of fuel pellet and the inner surface of fuel cladding tube by eliminating a wafer at the upper part of the fuel pellet and bringing the plenum sprung into contact with the top face of the fuel pellet thereby increasing the spatial volume at the plenum part. CONSTITUTION:A plenum spring 9 is tapered conically at one end thereof on the side touching a fuel pellet 7 in order to prevent the spring 9 from touching the outer circumference of the pellet 7 and crackling. Furthermore, the most forward end part of the spring 9 is prevented from touching the inner ace of a fuel cladding tube 10 thus ensuring the mechanical soundness thereof. In this regard, an upper end plug 11 and the end part touching the pellet 7 are ground horizontally to increase the contact area thus enhancing the heat transmission performance and the mechanical soundness. Furthermore, the spring 9 on the pellet 7 side employs a tight contact structure of 4-12mm long forming a hollow tubular solid thus enhancing thermal neutron absorption of short fuel rod and reducing the output spike (output at the upper end of short fuel rod increases).
