摘要： The operation of a nuclear reactor is controlled by using a first control means (typically control rods) and a second finer control means (typically variation in the flow rate of cooling water through the core) in combination, with the objective of preventing mechanical interaction between the fuel and the cladding material from occurring. The control rods are first withdrawn and, hen the reactor power has reached a level at which fuel-cladding interaction commences, withdrawal ceases; circulation of cooling water through the core is then increased to raise the reactor power to a predetermined level. The reactor power is then held during operation at this predetermined level by using the cooling water flow rate to correct deviation from the desired level. The method applies to a boiling water reactor, in which the flow of cooling water through the core is regulated by injector pumps inside the reactor pressure vessel and circulating water driven by pumps outside the pressure vessel to actuate these ejector pumps.

Arithmetic unit 20 is operating the position of control rod, the power of neutron flux detector 10, the feed water heating temperature derived from the reactor thermal power data, setting the rate of change of steam extraction, thereby controling the flow control valve 24, heating the feed water with the feed water heater 9, feeding to reactor container 1, reducing the power level of reactor, and enabling the control rod 11 to extract from the core.
