CONSTITUTION:The ruthenium tetraoxide RuO4 deposits as the solid of RuO2 on the polyethylene film 3 when the crystal resonator 5 consisting of a rock crystal 1, the silver electrode 2 and the film 3 is installed in the environment contg. the RuO4. The electrode 2 is, therefore, increased in weight by the deposition and the resonance frequency of the resonator 5 is changed. The amt. of the RuO2 in the environment can be determined by measuring the change in the frequency with time. Since the ratio of the mol. wt. of the RuO2 and the RuO4 is constant, the amt. of the RuO4 existing in the environment is computed from the resulted RuO2 and the concn. thereof is measured. The concn. of the RuO4 is detected on the spot with the high sensitivity in this way.

Therefore, measurement is possible in both gaseous and liquid phases and the minute reaction quantity of the membrane in both liquid and gaseous phases or the minor component in environment can be detected with high sensitivity and this sensor can be adapted as a corrosion detection sensor, the temp. sensor or gas sensor in environment, a microorganism detection sensor or a minor ion concn. sensor as a probe evaluating the reliability of electronic data machinery. Further, this sensor is rich in mass productivity and can be formed in an extremely small size.

    • PURPOSE:To detect the concn. of RuO4 on the spot with a high sensitivity by using a crystal resonator having org. films on electrode surfaces. CONSTITUTION:The RuO4 is a chemical material having a high oxidative property and, therefore, if org. matter 3 is brought into contact therewith, the RuO4 is self-reduced in the process of oxidizing the other and is fixed as the stable oxide of RuO2. The weight of the electrodes 3 is, therefore, increased by deposition and the resonance frequency of the crystal resonator 5 is changed accordingly. Since the frequency change is proportional to the weight increase, the amt. of the RuO2 formed and eventually the concn. of the RuO4 are known from the change of the frequency with time. This frequency change can be detected by a frequency counter and the calculation of the difference from the resonance frequency and the change with time is possible if a differential calculation unit is separately provided. The 'on-the-spot' calculation of the concn. of the RuO4 with the high sensitivity is thus possible.
