    • An ink jet printer has an ink channel which is filled with ink, a nozzle which moves the ink channel into fluid connection with the external atmosphere and a thermal resistor which is provided in the ink channel near to the nozzle. A voltage pulse is applied to the thermal resistor, in response to which the thermal resistor heats up rapidly so that some of the ink in the ink jet channel is rapidly vaporised by undercooled boiling which is caused by alternating bubble formation, in order to form a bubble, the expansion of the bubble causing an ink droplet to be ejected from the nozzle. In this thermal resistor boiling begins within 2 mu sec after the application of the voltage pulse has begun. The voltage pulse is applied to the thermal resistor for a period of 3 mu sec or less. The bubble which is produced by applying the voltage pulse to the thermal resistor disappears without the thermal resistor producing secondary bubbles. The bubble which is produced by the application of the voltage pulse to the thermal resistor disappears within 11 seconds after the application of the voltage pulse has begun. The energy required to produce the bubble is 4 mu J/50 x 50 mu m or less.
