摘要： PURPOSE:To enable a glass body of a large size having refractive index distribu tion in the perpendicular direction under mild conditions by dipping a gel which is formed by adding a metal salt to a suspension of a silica powder of a speci fied specific surface area and specified particle sizes in an eluate heated lower than the boiling point to leach the metal. CONSTITUTION:A silica powder of less than 60m /g specific surface area and more than 30 millimicrons particle size is dispersed in water, combined with a solution of metal salt or metal alkoxide, for example, a solution of Ge(OC4H9)4 in n-propanol to form a gel. The gel is dipped in an eluate of acid, alkali, water or organic solvent at a temperature lower than the boiling point to elute a part of the metal components. Then, the product is dried, and sintered to give the objective glass body having a refractive index distribution in the perpen dicular direction which is suitable for a parent material of optical fiber or rod lenses.

摘要： PURPOSE:To prevent occurrence of pores during sintering and to obtain a glass material having a desired refractive index distribution, by partially eluting metallic components contained in gel, immersing the gel in a solvent or an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde, drying and then sintering. CONSTITUTION:Silica gel containing one or more metallic components selected from Ge, P, B, Ta, Ti, Sb, Al, Nb, Sn, Pb and Zn is immersed in an eluting solution (e.g. water) 3 to partially elute the metallic components at >= the boiling point of the eluting solution to give silica gel 1a from which the contained metals are partially eluted. Then the silica gel 1a is immersed in a solvent or an aqueous solution 4 containing 10vol% formamide, then in a mixed solution 5 of methanol and water, then in methanol 6, dried, put in an electric furnace 7 and sintered.

摘要： PURPOSE:To improve the weatherability of the glass body by adding a metallic or nonmetallic component to the Si component of the glass body to convert the Si component to a gel, eluting a part of the gel in the soln. of >=1 kind among sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, then drying and sintering the gel. CONSTITUTION:A metallic component such as Pb alkoxide and Al alkoxide or a component contg. a Ti component as the metallic component and a P component as the nonmetallic component is added to an Si component such as Si alkoxide, and the mixture is hydrolyzed, gelled and collected in a glass vessel 3 as a wet gel 1. The wet gel is dipped in an eluant consisting of a 0.1-10N aq. soln. of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or nitric acid at room temp., heated close to the b.p., then cooled and eluted. The wet gel is further cleaned with at least one kind among water, methanol, ethanol, etc. The gel is then heated to the b.p. of the cleaning soln. with the temp. being controlled, dried, then cooled, sintered by a drying furnace 5 at about 1200 deg.C and vitrified. A glass having a refractive index distribution is thus obtained.
