    • Diamide/ester mixt. (I) are useful as lubricants for plastics, esp. plastics based on ABS copolymers; (I) contain (a) light-coloured bis-(8-22C fatty acid)-alkylenediamides, (b) 8-22C fatty acid esters and opt. (c) metal soaps of 8-22C fatty acids (II), and are obtd. by condensation of diamines of formula H2N-R-NH2 (III) in a melt contg. (II) so that part of the acid reacts to give the corresp. diamides, esterification of part of the acid with 8-22C fatty alcohols and/or di- to hexa-hydric 2-15C alkanols, and opt. reaction of part of the acid with basic cpds. of divalent metals to form the corresp. soaps; R = linear, branched or cyclic 2-12C alkylene. Pref. (II) are satd. 16-22C fatty acids, and (III) is ethylene-, tetramethylene- or hexamethylene-diamine; that melt contains 2.2-10 (pref. 2.5-4) mol. (II)/mol. (III), and wt. ratio (a):(b):(c) = (4-6):(1-2):(2-4); condensation of (II) and (III) is carried out at 140-190 (pref. 160-180) deg.C. until the mixt. has amine no. below 1, esterification is carried out at 150-190 deg.C. in the presence of an esterification catalyst, pref. using satd. 12-22C fatty alcohols, esp. ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, di-, tri- or tetra-glycerol, trimethylolpropane or di-trimethylolpropane, or pentaerythritol or di-pentaerythritol, and the metal soap is produced by reaction at 150-160 deg.C. pref. with oxides, hydroxides and/or carbonates of Mg, Ca, Ba, Cd, Zn and/or Pb, esp. Ca and/or Zn; a Zn salt of (II) is added to the melt or formed in the melt before the above reactions; pref., (a), (b) and (c) are produced in that order (to give Mg, Ca, Bd, Cd or Pb soaps in stage (c), esp. Ca soaps); further amts. of (II) are added to the melt contg. (a) and (b) before reaction with metal cpds.. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides lubricants and release agents for ABS and other plastics, which are produced by a simpler method than prior-art materials and which have lower m.pts. than the pure diamides (e.g. ethylenediamine distearate), combined with at least as good flow properties; the diamine and amide are protected from oxidn. by the presence of excess (II), thus preventing the usual discolouration (see also DE 3916356)
