Mantles. - In order to produce a symmetrical mantle with its closed end consisting of a single thickness of fabric without seam, the tubular fabric A is severed along a curved line, and the edges of a double segmentshaped or approximately oval-shaped piece C of fabric are secured to the severed edges of the mantle, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the finished mantle, when burnt off, has a hemispherical lower end, as shown in Fig. 8.

Mantles. - The fabric of inverted mantles is made unsymmetrical about its central axis in such a manner that, when it is burned out, the unequal contraction longitudinally and transversely of the fabric causes it to become symmetrical. The tubular fabric may be cut as shown in Fig. 1 (Sheet 1), which shows one side B of the cut portion turned up, and the edges are sewn together so that the fabric takes the shape shown in Fig. 6 (Sheet 1). When this is opened out, it takes the elliptical shape shown in end view in Fig. 8 (Sheet 2), the chains of loops in the fabric running parallel to the major axis, and the rows of loops parallel to the minor axis C-C. When the fabric is burned out, the unequal contraction along the major and minor axes causes its end to take the hemispherical shape shown in Fig. 13 (Sheet 2). According to a modification, an elliptical piece of fabric, Fig. 3 (Sheet 3), is sewn into the end of the tubular fabric, Fig. 4 (Sheet 3), and takes an approximately hemispherical form when burned out.
