    • A rotary compressor having a housing with a pump cavity, an orbiting ring piston in the cavity, a cylindrical post carried by the housing within the orbiting ring, at least one pair of vanes engaging the orbiting ring to define pumping chambers in the cavity, a pair of primary fluid inlet passages communicating with the working pressure chamber during expansion of the pressure chamber, a pair of fluid outlet ports communicating with the working chambers as the volume of the working chambers contracts upon rotation of the orbiting ring piston, and a pair of secondary fluid inlet ports in parallel disposition with respect to the primary ports formed in a valve plate adjacent the orbiting ring piston whereby the orbiting ring piston registers with the ports and opens and closes the ports in synchronism with the opening end and closing of the main ports whereby the effective inlet flow capacity for the fluid into the expanding working chamber is increased.

    • A gas compressor includes a housing defining a compression chamber, a crankshaft having an eccentric surface radially offset from the axis of rotation of the crankshaft, an orbiting ring rotatably mounted on the eccentric for rotation about an axis offset from the shaft axis, a cylindrical post coaxial with the axis of the housing passages for carrying gas to and from the compression chamber, vanes movable radially with respect to the orbiting ring, and pressure sensitive valves that open exhaust passages from the compression chamber. The orbiting ring rotates in continual contact with the inner surface of the housing and the outer surface of the cylindrical post. Compression occurs within a first stage space and a second stage space, each space divided into compression chambers by the sliding vanes and contact between the ring and post or between the ring and housing. An intermediate pressure chamber is located in one end of the housing and this chamber can be configured to allow for intercooling of the refrigerant. It is also possible to provide gas separation of the discharge gas and return the separated gas to the intermediate chamber for improved efficiency of the compressor.

    • An electromagnetic clutch (110) for an air conditioning compressor includes a generally cylindrical pulley (111) rotatably mounted on a comressor housing (116) and having an annular friction surface (120a, 120b) in a cavity (120). A driven member (112) is mounted on a compressor shaft (113) and has a leg (118, 119) with an annular friction surface (118a, 118b, 119a, 119b) positioned radially adjacent the cavity friction surface to form an annular space (120c, 120f) therebetween. A quantity of flowable magnetic material (127) is provided in the annular space and a magnetic coil (124) is fixed on the housing adjacent thereto. When electrical power is applied to the magnetic coil (124), magnetic flux is generated in the annular space (120c, 120f) polarizing the magnetic material and frictionally coupling the friction surfaces to cause the pulley (111) to rotate the driven member (112). A divider (123) can be positioned between the legs (118, 119) to provide additional annular spaces (120d, 120e) for the magnetic material (127).
