    • A printing cylinder for a rotary printing press has a support, which is fixed against relative rotation, and a jacket rotatable around the latter, which is supported by a row of support elements, disposed axially side-by-side and individually controllable and radially displaceable at least in part in order to attain an even printing pressure across the width of the cylinder while avoiding any bending of the jacket. The jacket is constructed of three coaxial tubes, an interior tube, a filler body and a printing forme support, at least two of which, or even all three, in the rest state, are separated by a small gap so that they can be easily pulled off each other and exchanged in order to change the printing press over to another print pattern or another diameter or register. By charging the sealed interior chamber with pressure, for example with the use of the fluid pressure required for the support elements, the gap(s) are closed, so that the individual jacket parts have a press fit with each other and rotate together. By reducing the interior pressure to lower pressures, for example atmospheric pressure or a partial vacuum, it is possible to open the gap(s) again selectively.

Upon pressure relief or the existence of negative pressure within the controlled deflection roll a play or clearance is formed between the outer roll shell part and the inner roll shell part of the roll shell which enables dismantling and exchange of the outer roll shell part of the roll shell without the need to dismantle the controlled deflection roll or to remove such from the machine.

    • In the plastic foil-producing apparatus where a fluent plastic mass is cooled in a roll nip between a roller member and a counter roller to a defined predetermined solidification temperature, the roller member includes a non-rotatable support member and a rotatable roller shell supported at the non-rotatable support member by one or more support elements. The roller shell includes a plurality of coaxial zones, namely, an inner soft rubber zone and a thin outer metallic zone possessing good thermal conductivity, for example, formed of copper or silver or alloys thereof, the outer surface of which is mirror smooth, for instance, chromium plated. The roller surface is cooled by cooling gas nozzles regulated by a temperature sensor, so that the temperature of the roller member in the roll nip assumes an exactly defined temperature. Consequently, there can be fabricated a plastic foil, for example, formed of polyethylene having a narrow solidification temperature range and possessing a defined thickness profile while preventing sticking of the plastic foil at the outer surface of the roller member.

    • In a rotary printing press with a printing cylinder and a counter roller, such as an impression cylinder, for example, and a print web guided between them, faultless print quality across the entire width is attained, even with an extremely wide print web and a correspondingly slim printing cylinder. The printing cylinder is provided with a fixed support and a jacket, which is rotatable around it, and is supported by a row of support elements with a printing pressure which is controlled individually or in groups. With this arrangement, a uniform printing pressure profile across the print web width and, simultaneously, a print gap which is generally uniform are attained. Deformations and displacements of the printing cylinder jacket cross-wise to the printing plane are avoided in that additional cross-bracing elements for exerting a restoring force on the printing cylinder jacket cross-wise to the printing plane are provided. The restoring force of the cross-bracing elements is controlled by position sensors or bearing pressure sensors in such a way that the position of the printing cylinder jacket is maintained even with particularly lengthy and slim printing cylinders. Oscillations of the printing cylinder are prevented by hydrostatic support elements which have a damping effect.

    • Within the impression cylinder of a rotogravure press and within the roll shell thereof there are provided over the width of the impression cylinder a number of layer packages which can be separately supplied with electrical charge in order to apply electrostatic charges to the impression cylinder surface for the purpose of augmenting printing of a material web. By differently controlling segments of the impression cylinder, there can be accommodated different widths of the material web to be processed. In order to concentrate the electric charge at the actually used region of the impression cylinder and for protecting the zones of the impression cylinder which are not currently being used, there are provided internally of the roll jacket, in axial direction thereof, a number of support elements arranged adjacent one another and braced against a central carrier. These support elements are controlled such that only the support elements in those segments, where there is also supplied electrical charge, exert a pressing force. At the end regions of the impression cylinder, there can be provided counter support elements which are only controlled when there is not applied any electrostatic charge at the end regions of the impression cylinder, in other words, when printing a narrower material web. Hence, in this situation no electrical charge is transferred at the not used roll end regions and the impression cylinder is protected against wear and abrasion.
