    • An explosive powder charge operated setting tool contains a channel (7) located between an inner piston guide (2) for a piston (1) and an outer housing part (6). At the rear end of the tool, the channel (7) continues in a carrier (3) and can be in communication with a cartridge receptacle (4) in the carrier (3). In its front region, the channel (7) is connected via a first opening (2c) in the piston guide (2) with a guide bore (2a) for the piston (1). Towards the rear end of the channel (7) there is a valve arrangement for forming a propellant gas storage space connected through the first opening (2c) to the guide bore (2a). Propellant gases within the storage space are compressed by the piston (1) driven in the setting direction and, after completion of the driving or setting procedure, serve to return the piston (1) back into its rear starting position by expansion of the storage space gases. After the driving operation, a second opening (3a) communicating with the ambient atmosphere vents the space rearwardly of the piston (1) so that the piston (1) can move without interference back into the rear starting position and, in addition, any residual gases can escape through the second opening into the ambient atmosphere.

    • In an explosive powder actuated setting device, a driving piston (8) is displaceable between a ready-to-fire position and a fired position within a barrel (12) formed by a piston guide (5). When the piston is driven from the ready-to-fire position into the fired position, it is held by braking balls (17) supported in recesses (16) in the piston guide. As it moves into the fired position, the piston moves the braking balls into the range of a spring (18) which biases the balls inwardly against the shank (11) of the piston (8). When the piston is returned into the ready-to-fire position, the balls move out of the range of the spring releasing the biasing force acting on the piston shank via the balls.

    • An explosive powder charge actuated fastening element driving device includes a driving piston mounted within a guide bore in an axially extending piston guide for displacement between a firing position and a driving position where the fastening element is driven into a receiving material. After driving a fastening element, the driving piston is returned toward the firing position by exhaust gases generated when a charge is fired. A channel laterally encloses the piston guide with a first and a second aperture, spaced apart in the axial direction, extending through the piston guide communicating between the guide bore and the channel. A blocking slide movable relative to the piston guide is located within the channel. The exhaust gases can flow through the first aperture into the channel and, when the blocking slide is displaced relative to the piston guide, entrapped in a storage space within the channel so that the exhaust gases flow through the second aperture into the guide bore and return the driving piston toward the firing position.

    • The invention relates to the use of agglomerates of silicic acid having an average agglomerate size of 0.5 to 50 .mu.m, containing primary particles of silicic acid having an average particle size of 1 to 100 nm and serving as filler in dental materials on the basis of ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers. This reinforcing filler is practically colorless and can be blended in considerable quantity into the polymerizable monomer material especially mono-functional and di-functional as well as polyfunctional esters of the acrylic acid and the methacrylic acid and yields a satisfactorily processable plastically deformable paste. If necessary, the agglomerated silicic acid is used together with non-agglomerated micro-fine silicic acid of an average particle size of 1 to 100 nm. The shaped bodies obtained after the curing of the polymerizable material with the fillers show superior compressive strength, low thermal expansion, high colour stability and low water absorption, and moreover can be finished to high luster. The agglomerated fillers provided according to the invention are generally suitable for tooth filling preparations and tooth restoration materials as well as for the production of artificial teeth.

    • An explosive powder operated setting device uses the propellant gases from an ignited explosive powder charge for driving a piston which, in turn, propels a fastening element from the device into a receiving material. The device includes a housing, a barrel mounted in the housing with the piston displaceably mounted in the barrel. A tubular-shaped slide valve is rotatably mounted in the rear portion of the barrel behind the piston. The front end of the slide valve combines with the barrel in forming a space in which the propellant gases contact the piston and drive it through the barrel. The rear end of the slide valve forms a part of the combustion chamber within the device. At its front end, the slide valve is frusto-conically shaped and forms a seal with a correspondingly shaped surface in the barrel. An exhaust duct section extends through the barrel and is in communication with another exhaust duct section in the housing. The slide valve has exhaust openings extending radially through it which can be aligned with the exhaust duct section in the barrel so that, if required, a part of the propellant gases can be exhausted to the atmosphere without being used for driving the piston.
