For example, when conveying or transporting a relatively large quantity of radioactive waste or the like whose radiation level exceeds a reference level, a certain amount of radiation can be shielded relatively easily at low cost by surrounding an area loaded with the radioactive waste with wood or wood-derived material. For another example, when disposing or storing a relatively large quantity of radioactive waste or the like whose radiation level exceeds a reference level, storage facilities can be built relatively easily at low cost by installing radiation shields formed from wood or wood-derived material around a disposal or storage area.
